I'm slightly biased as my sister works out in Kefalonia but here's my (humble) opinion.

Lassi is nowhere near to being a Faliraki or Laganas in terms of nightlife etc. but it the busiest resort on the island and continues to get busier year on year. The beaches in Lassi are great however.

In terms of an unspolit area with great beaches Mounda or Turtle beach/bay is probably your best bet - the beach is amazing and quiet however there are only a couple of accommodation blocks there and a beach bar. The nearest resort is Scala and Monda is only a 10 minute drive so maybe stay in Scala and hire a car? Scala has a great Greek feel although the beach is sand and shingle.

Hope this helps.

A friend has just come back from Katelios which she highly recommends... uncommercialised, great fish tavernas, no noisy clubs or discos. Manos do good accommodation right on the beach.

Returning to Kefalonia in September been going since 1989 sometimes twice a year, we always stay in LIxouri which is very quiet the night clubs are on the outskirt of town but so are the beaches, We travel independantly as Lixouri is not in any brouchures maybe able to access on the net but Kefalonia is a lovely Island a very popular place is Skala, Poros is nice but think it has a pebble beach, Assos is gorgouse but maybe a bit too quiet lovely for a day trip.
I think you will enjoy Kefalonia whereever you stay Lassi does have some beautiful beaches and do think you would be able to avoid the crowds, hope you have a lovely holiday

Personally I thought Agios Efimia is a lovely base to explore the island the people are so friendly and all the main sites are easy enough to get via car plus it has a boat hire service, dive centre and ferries to some other islands.
One thing I do have to point out though is that it has smooth pebble beaches rather than snad.

I love Kefalonia as I said but just to clarify.

Katelios is lovely and quiet but the beach isn't anything much to write home about. Fish restaurants are very good though and it's only 15-20 mins drive to Mounda beach and Scala.

Aghia Efimia (sp!) is lovely too but really doesn't have a beach - more a pile of stones but definetely a greek feel. It's also not that near any of the other resorts but this can be a benefit.
