Back to Santorini perhaps?????

Hi Greeklass ! I'd definitely go back to Santorini - perhaps to Oia as opposed to Kamari. There are quite a few Greek Islands which I have yet to visit so a return trip won't be on the cards for a few years yet. We like a resort to have a combination of tradition and maybe a few music or quiz bars - any suggestions -we're fifty going on 18!

Hi Helen,

glad you enjoyed yourselves in Santorini. You and your hubby should travel up the saronic gulf a wee bit and holiday in Poros.

You have the resort in Poros, fantastic places to eat, some excellent, classy but not to expensive hotels, music bars and of course the Greek night. 50 mins by Hydrofoil and you caN go into Athens for the day. 3 mins and 70 cents later by water taxi ,and your in Galatas, a typical Greek working town that has good value for money tavernas, cafes and a couple of small hotels and studios if you decide to stay there. Poros has been our best holiday yet, we're going back next year. I cant reccomend it highly enough.

Thanks for that bigstego. Who do you usually travel with? I haven't looked at Poros before so I'll have to get the brochures in.

Hi Helen, no British tour operators go to Poros, although Thomson did years ago. We go DIY, flight to Athens, taxi or bus to the Port of Piraeus and then 50 mins on the Hydrofoil to Poros. You can also catch the ferry to Poros as well, its only 8 euros and a lovely sail up the saronic gulf, you go past one of the other islands- Eigina and your not far away from Hydra and Spetes (island hopping). Its a lovely journey on the ferry.

There's loads of accomodation on Poros to choose from, we're going to Studios next year 55 euros per room per night. Just google Poros Greece and you'll find loads of info.

Thanks for that Bigstego! As I work in a school I have to take my main holiday in August. When I have priced DIY holidays before they always work out more expensive than the package tours, because I have to travel in peak weeks. I will certainly have a look though as it sounds right up our street.

If you're near London, book well ahead with BA. They give very good value for money for early bookers, and with three flights a day there's travel choice.

My high season preference is the overnight flight, which this year was £70 each way including all taxes if you book three or four months ahead. And in flight meals! You arrive at the airport at about 4am, which is a bit of a bore since you have to hang around for a bit to wait for the longer distance buses to kick in. But then you're straight to Piraeus, with a whole day to find and catch a suitable ferry . . .

Great for going to Poros, Naxos, Syros, even Milos or any of a wide variety of islands, any of which could suit you. I've got summaries of most of these islands on my web site - google 'baerselpeeps' to find the site.
