you have to try the West Coast of Scotland. loads of great places. Stop off at Oban. There is a Sea Life near by which your 7 year old will love I'm sure. Inveraray Jail is not far away - it is a 19th century jail brought back to life. There is also a wildlife place nearby- great for all kids( and adults) Perhaps someone can help with the name? Within all that there is the stunning scenery. And of course Loch Ness! I can't give recs for Oban accomodation as we haven't been there for a while but there are loads of good B&Bs with ensuites.

Whilst on Scotland`s West Coast, a visit to the Kintyre peninsu.la is a must. The coastal scenery is lovely, and the beaches are great for young children. The wildlife park we went to was just south of Inverary and was called The Argyll Wildlife Park. As stated, Inverary jail is great, your little boy should love it.

Thanks all some great ideas and links there. May have to put the tri on hold for another though as everyone says...its cheaper to go abroad   not that we can do that either mind. I calculated at least 2000 miles driving to do the itinerary I fancy (West Midlands, York, Liverpool, Lakes, Scotland)
Keep the ideas coming though... :D

How about driving to the north of England and doing Liverpool, the lakes etc

(If you get a chance go to Halifax, just over into West Yorkshire and visit Eureka Museum for children - it's the best museum I've ever taken the kids to - perfect for 7 year olds)

Then get a train or coach to Scotland and use your Families place nr Edinburgh as a base. If you book early enough you should get some good train prices - a few years ago one we bought a 4 person rail ticket (I think from GNER) that was really good value.

The website netmums.com is really good for finding what there is for kids in each area so might help you decide on areas to visit.

Hope that helps - sounds exciting
