Hopefully for Thailand this will be a short term slump. I'm certainly not put off going to the country...its not the first coup I've seen since I started visiting Thailand...however its just another straw towards breaking the camels back, especially for the first time visitor who may well pick what they perceive to be a safer destination over Thailand.

Tourist memory does seem to be short though, and the Thai coup seems to have already slipped off the news radar.
