Has anyone been to or even heard of the Villa Melia Complex??
I will probably book there for the end of August, but can't find any reviews anywhere on the net!!
Here's the description from Hellenic Voyages Ltd...
"The high standard of accommodation offered at Villa Melia complex makes this choice of setting ideal for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful location.
The apartments can be found in the traditional village of Koutouloufari, with its cobbled streets and quaint houses, overlooking the town of Hersonissos with its gorgeous beaches and bustling atmosphere. The complex features apartments and studios that can sleep up to 4 guests and consist of a lounge area with 2 beds, kitchenette (2 electric rings & fridge) shower, W.C. and balcony. Air-conditioning, safe deposit boxes and direct dial telephone are available at a local charge."
Anyone???
Thanks!!!
Paul
dont know the accommodation in that area, but i know koutouloufari. just for that (as in location) i would give a go
I went ahead and booked after finding out a little more about Koutouloufari. I go end of August. It does seem like a nice place! What's the heat like over there this time of year? And will I need insect repellant??
Cheers
Paul
At the mo we are doing ok here even tho if that small cool wind was not there we would have suffered. its not a heat wave yet but you never know how it will develop.
take the repellant in order to be safe in case koutouloufari has mosquitos.
So you're living out there? Where abouts??
what is the deet as i dont know that word.
'Deet' is a well knwn American brand of insect repellant. It's the most powerful stuff apparently - was used by special forces while serving abroad. Do you recommend me bringing insect repellant??
Thanks
Paul
believe me living here its nice when summer. here in the winder is not so good or nice (depents the way u see it)
We too went with Hellenic Voyages - never again!
Firstly, my other half was told by name removed at Hellenic that he had given us "good flights". He joked that we could go cheaper if we went in the middle of the night, but he was sure we didn't want that!
When the itinerary arrived, the flights were to leave Manchester at 21:15 and arrive in Crete at 03:25 - great flight times!!! We complained, but were told that they were the only times that the flights went at this time of year! The flights for the return were supposed to be much better, leaving Crete at 18:00 and arriving in Manchester at 20:20. However, when the tickets arrived, we were going at 22:45 and not 21:15, so we got to Villa Melia as the sun was rising! The return flights were supposed to be leaving at 19:30, not 18:00. Still acceptable though for the return.
Well, we got there on Viking Airlines - a somewhat basic no frills Swedish airline. No food, no duty free, just drinks and basic snacks on a 4 hour flight! EasyJet has a better selection of food on board than Viking, who run ageing McDonnell Douglas MD-83's which i would guess must be on at least their 3rd or 4th owner by now.
Villa Melia can hardly be called a "complex". it looks smart on the outside as it has just been newly painted, but inside is a bit of a let down! Simplex maybe but certainly not a complex No reception area, just a desk and chair outside for the rep to use, no pool or usable garden, nowhere to sit outside really except on your balcony, which faces towards the sea, which is north, so the sun never gets to the balconies. No use if you want to sit in the sun! You can just about see the sea from the balconies, over the other buildings in front of you. As Basil Fawlty once said "Of course you can see the sea from the bedroom. It is that bit over there between the land and the sky!" Perhaps the higher rooms have a better view!
The rooms are big enough but fairly basic. The comfort is minimal. You can sit on your bed, on a hard dining chair or on a hard plastic patio chair on the balcony! If you expect to have some fairly basic things like a plug for the sink in the kitchen area or in the bathroom wash basin so that you can wash the crockery and your face, then think again! There are none, at least there were none in the room that we were in. If you expect a kettle so that you can boil water for a cup of tea, bad luck. You will be boiling the water in a saucepan - the only saucepan that there is! So, luxury it is definitely not!
It is a bit noisy even though we were the only ones there as there is a new "Sports Cafe" just across the narrow road and it plays football mostly from Sky Sports, and any other sport and/or music pretty much from dawn until the last person leaves the following morning, which is well into the wee small hours!
Koutouloufari is quite a nice place though, with plenty of tourist type shops, bars and restaurants. It is a village though rather than a town and if you want a good selection of shops, bars and clubs you can easily walk down the hill to Hersonissos, where you will find pretty much everything that you could wish for.
Well, as I said. On the way back, our flight was supposed to be leaving Crete at 19:30 but we were informed a couple of days before leaving that the flight had been cancelled! We would now be leaving Crete at 03:50 and picked up from Villa Melia at 01:10!!! Marvellous! In the end, we took off from Crete at 4:50 due to delays and got back to Manchester, really tired at 06:55 this morning......
as i have not seen the villa melia i cant express opinion. On the other hand what is simply for me might be more than good for someone else. But i will agree from what i read that it does sound simply.
Regarding flights as i work with airlines and charters i can understand what happened.
The general idea is that very bad hours for flights means that people dont like them, thus not popular, thus cheaper (for taxes that is). If for any reason due to high demand availability is running out, then price will go up, but not on taxes.
Changes to charter flight time table is something that happens often and that is part of the deal that you know when you book one. this is why they say you have to double check departure time 48 hours before departure.
The point about Villa Melia was that the Hellenic Voyages brochure says as I quote "The high standard of accommodation offered at Villa Melia complex makes this choice of setting ideal for a relaxing holiday in a beautiful location." Relaxing if you don't mind the constant noise of cars and noisy scooters going within a few feet of you from dawn to the early hours! It says further on "Air conditioning, safe deposit boxes and direct dial telephone are available at local charge." As our room had none of these facilities, presumably if we asked for them they would have arranged to have the air con, telephone and safety deposit box installed in our room!!!!!! We were told by Mary at the Villa Melia on arrival that ours was one of the "best rooms" which I can confirm as she showed me another ground floor room as my partner is disabled. We chose to remain in the first room with my partner putting up with the climb up the stairs!!!
I'm glad I was notified of a response here, as I would never have read your posts otherwise.
Villa Melia's standard of accomodation was BELOW BASIC. In the Hellenic Voyages brochure, it was described (as you've already pointed out) as really luxurious apartments. Mrs Melia (we refered to her as that) was quite a nice lady. Very helpful and gave good advise on the whereabouts in Crete.
Our coach on the way there, was driven by a frustrated Cretian, and he literally mumbled the accomodation names in the microphone. It was almost impossible to make out, so everyone had to look out for the names of the apartments written on the buidings themselves. Our rep was unable to do this herself, as she got off the coach before any drop offs without saying a word to anyone... I don't know where she went, or why she didn't do her job.
The coach dropped us about 50 metres from Villa Melia, at about 2:30am. I asked the driver where Villa Melia was, and he merely pointed in the distance. Eventually we had to actually ask a bartender where it was.
We were greeted by an A4 sheet of paper with out surnames on it, stuck to the outside of the door of room no. 10. (Ground floor)
It was a TOTAL disappointment. The 30'C sticky air immediately made me sweat, and feel very uncomfortable. The room was very basic (all described in posts above) The sheets were stained, as well as the tatty towels. It's a good job I had my Leatherman with me too, as I had to fix the showerhead bracket back on the wall. The lock on the apartment door was...well...not really a lock. Like some old bathroom locks, you have to actually push the handle from the inside, and then close the door. Not very secure...
I studied the air con unit, and searched around for the remote, with no luck. We had to sleep in that heat for the first night, and it was simply unbearable! I got no more than 2 hours sleep. The air con would have worked out something like over 200 Euros for the 2 weeks, so I bought a fan instead. (Nowhere near as effective obviously - but much cheaper)
Anyway - basically it was a total let down. This was due to the fact that Hellenic Voyages advertised the place as being a really high standard of accomodation. In the brochure they have stars beside all the accomodations - Villa Melia had 4 - and so I had assumed this meant 4 star. In reality, it was 2 star at most.
Overall, I did have a good holiday. Crete is attractive, the accomodation was the only negative thing!
I have written a complaint letter to them, I feel they should compensate for the false advertising.
Sorry this was a bit long, but I feel a lot better...
