My wife and a friend spent a night in Edibinburgh this week on a course, they had to pay £150 for a hotel no better than a Travel Lodge - they stayed here as the course was in the hotel.
My wife purchased 2 small white wines and sodas and was charged £10.20!!!!!
At least Dick Turpin wore a mask.
I can beat that, hotel near Manchester Airport, £14.60 for a glass of red and a glass of white.
Kensington Olympia Hilton. Malibu and lemonade and a pint of beer. 10.20......................15 years ago!!!
Keswick we stayed there about 2 years ago and I think the price has stayed the same along with the decor!!!!
Hilton Metropole Birmingham, Spring 2006
I said to my friend let's eat in the Carvery restaurant thinking it would be the best value
£32.50 each I seem to remember just for a carvery meal - drinks on top
However I can remember taking a photo of the menu outside The Hotel De Paris in Monte Carlo over 10 years ago now
Even then the prices converted to:
£80 for the cheapest starter
£120 for the cheapest main course
£80 for the cheapest dessert
10 years ago - plus the Rough Guide to Monaco stated that the cheapest drink in theri bar then was a coke at £25 per glass
Dread to think how much they charge now
Prices are designed to keep out all but the jetsetters
Wayne, you might be interested to read my post about coming back from Cornwall early as I do feel a bit ripped off myself (ok we can't help the weather)..we work hard, we want to take a break, we'd rather go abroad but no, we'll have a break in the UK, we get a good price, we think it's well rated and then reality strikes! No wonder so many people do go abroad if they have the choice, not only due to the weather but paying exorbitant prices in this country as you've illustrated!
I looked at a holiday home (on a different site) as I was bored in the rain and was told that the site fees started at £4.5K per year and on top of that the owners had to pay council tax, water rates, electric and gas bills etc etc. for each accomodation. The caravan itself was also twice what I paid for my house just before labour came to power.
We also had a program about a local hotel where the owners had a nigh on million pound mortgage to cover.
So the scenarios are the owners are struggling to make ends meet and that is why the service is lacking or it is owned by some rich person whose only interest is in turning maximum profit and so will let things degrade.
I do find it strange that while abroad we moan loudly at the slightest inconvenience but here in the UK we accept terrible conditions and service without a murmer.
It all depends where you go in the UK as well and everyone is different in terms of what they think is/isn't acceptable....the exceptional places really think about your experience whether it's a hotel or restaurant or an attraction, it's about the thought that goes into it and people will pay extra for that....if you can visibly see that little or no thought has gone into something, you are not likely to revisit, the small things do count!
Hotel bars are nearly always over priced for some reason.
Taking into account travelling, even though I booked late, I managed to get return flights from Leeds Bradford to Palma for less than £90 each - the train fare from Leeds to Edinburgh would have been £60 each way! We ended up using National Express - a lot cheaper but took 8 hours!
It would be nice to see a post about places which offer good value for money in Britain!
Why is it we can have half board accommodation in Spain for between £15 - £20 pounds per night when it costs about £50 per night in this country!
brianeric
the Uk. I'd love to holiday in theUk but I feel I need to take out a mortgage to stay in a hotel for a few days. I have found cheap deals at times but find I have to pay the same for room only in the Uk as I would pay for half board in Spain. Thank goodness I have relatives all over the place who let me stay with them when I visit.
