Hi. I'm a great fan of Corfu and have also been to Minorca. If you're anything like me you'll love the island. I find the Greek islands more laid back than the Spanish. There are all sorts of resorts on Corfu. From what you say about liking the quieter resorts you could try looking at San Steffanos on the North East of the island or the very pretty Paleokastritsa on the West. Most of the accomodation in the latter is based on a hill looking down over the picture-postcard bay. If you don't mind driving in Corfu (bearing in mind a lot of the roads are winding, narrow and hilly) there are lots of places to visit. We've been to Corfu twice and loved it. Most recently Kassiopi for our silver wedding last May. Happy Hunting!

Thanks, Paleokastritsa looks nice when I looked for images in Google.

Is the driving bad? I don't like being limited to one place and would like to see the island.

I don't drive but hubby says that if you're an experienced driver there's nothing to worry about. If you enjoy driving, this is the best way to get the most out of the island. You'd be able to get round all of the island in a couple of days (that's taking it slowly and enjoying an hour or two in each resort). A visit to Corfu town is a must, especially in the evening. You could leave the car behind and get the boat (depending on where you're based). That way you could sample the local wines along with your evening meal. Let us know what you decide on.

Thanks again for the info.
I take ages to make my mind up but I will let you know when I do.

Hi :wave

Like Shirley (hi Shirley, how are you doing?) I loved Corfu, Kassiopi is lovely and very easy going with nice tavernas, easy going and laid back Greeks and also a nice location with a ruined castle and some nice beaches and walks around the bays.

The driving in Corfu is not that bad, the roads are a bit twisty in places but the roads are not much different than here in the UK (well Scotland anyway) and are well signed posted.
The airport to Kassiopi takes about an hour or just slightly more and is by a twisty road, but the views at some points are lovely.

If you were to hire a car and travel around the island I am positive you would love it, you would discover many quiet and picturesque areas and also many fabulous small villages and tavernas.

Sorry I can't compare Corfu to Menorca as I haven't been to Menorca (yet) but I love going to Greece as it really is such a laid back and easy going country.

If you do go to Corfu, as Shirley mentioned do try to take in a trip to corfu town by boat as this is a lovely excursion.

I have talked myself into going back

Thanks for that on driving in Corfu. I've driven in Scotland many times 'off piste' as I call it, Loch Lomand and above. I'm also a regular in London so Corfu is sounding like a breeze.

As your not the first to mention Kassiopi I think thats going to be my starting point. Also mentioned is Spyridon about 10 miles away I believe.

Any pointers toward some well placed villas or a hotel would help. Not too bothered how busy it is during the day but I do like a peacefull retreat when I've had enough.

Loch Lomond is really my back garden, we stay next to balloch park which boundries the Loch, not a bad place if perhaps just a bit wet at times

Shirley stayed at the Dimas Apartments (Thomson) which I know she liked and is on our shortlist for our next visit, they can be viewed HERE I am sure Shirley can give you full information.
Thomson have several other properties and they can be viewed via THIS link, there is also good information and video clips & pictures on there as well.

Another property that I saw there and is on our shortlist is the LOFOS bookable with olympic Holidays.

Direct Holidays have several properties in Kassiopi viewable HERE

We booked last minute and stayed at Phillipos Apartments which were nice but they were a bit noisy thus we wouldn't return to them.

It is worth noting that for a lot of properties you will be dropped off & picked up at the square or harbour and will have to walk a short distance with your luggage to reach your accommodation.

Hi Graham. I'm doing fine and reminicing about my Greek holidays. Like yourself am a lover of Greece. Went to Santorini this summer but am having a change of scene next year and booked to go to Mexico.

Sifter Sam. Graham has given you some good pointers in his post. I would definitely stay in the dimas appartments again. However if anyone in your party has any sort of walking difficulties you'd best give it a miss due to the steep incline to most of the appartments. Please take a look at my review.

I love planning ahead for my holidays and am already starting to think about which Greek island to choose for 2008!!

Thanks for the web links / review and taking the time to help with advice, I'll have a good stare at the links when I get home from work. I'm sure once I have there will be a whole new sack of questions!

I'm keen to get something booked, the anticipation helps me get through the winter months

Hi I am lucky enough to have been to both of these places this year St Georges South in July and Cala Bosch 2 weeks ago....

I like Menorca a lot ...but love Corfu..........prices cheaper and most of all ....the people are more friendly and welcoming....

As someone said eairlier San Stefanos is great but we preferred St Georges...so laid back and easy going.....

Have done both places you mention, prefer Corfu all depending where your staying, We are in our late 60's tried Sidari about 3/4 years ago not for us but there are plenty of nice areas of Corfu and also found the local bus service quite good.
Happy holiday. pojo

hi Siftersam we went to Corfu this year and are going back next year we stayed in Kalami. Cant compare corfu with Menorca as have not been there, but have visited various Greek islands over the 14 years and both, my wife and myself fell in love with the place.
kalami is very Quiet with a couple of bars and 3 restauants, as aothers have said if you hire a car, the roads are a bit twisty and narrow in places, and driving round Corfu town can be entertaining but i would definitely give Coru a go if i were you.

We have been to both Menorca (96 sa caleta, 03 cala n blanes) and Corfu (97 Arillas 98 Kassiopi 06 st georges south) but cant really compare the two because they are both lovely in there own ways.
my choice would be corfu for reasons mentioned above and im biased towards Greek islands :D

Have a look a Arillas lovely resort and pleased to say hasnt changed since 97 http://www.Arillas.com
