Quite unashamedly I read the book.. you know the book. The Island whilst in Cyprus and thought.. mmm maybe next year..
I had it all planned a stay in Elounda.. go to the island, explore Crete.. but having read a couple of threads on Eounda am now confused.
I would like to stay somewhere traditional and not purpose built for tourists. Where there restaurants are local and not 'theme based', and local culture outweighs tourist demand for brit style entertainment. After all that is why I go abroad to see other countries as they are.
Elounda appeals, but someone did mention it was sleepy at night.. I am not a clubber but don't go to bed early either...
Is there anywere I will find
a) traditional feel.. both accomodation and eating...
b) beach
c)but also not tooooo quiet...
I am a culture vulture with a need for a little nightlife..
thanks in advance..
I intend to go May June next year...so no real rush just thinking outloud for now..
tx
North part of Crete is well developed for tourism. South not that developed for tourism. The further from the sea the more traditional.
Where ever there are tourists there is no longer that much of tradition. You cant have everything. it reminds me the clients i had once that were complaining for the electricity that reached a village down south and it spoiled the location, as now the local had electricity for lights and not cantles.....(they never thought what the locals went through in the winter).
I could name out a few villages to go to,but still that would spoil the dream and the location. one advice is. Go check most of the tourism brochures in most of the operators. Find those villages that are not that popular. Make a list. locate them on the map. the rest is up to you...
However, the west is best for mountains, culture, tradition, beaches, food and I enjoyed "the Island" just as much as you (I first went to Spinalonga only 20 years after the last lepers left).
Good luck
The West is Best! It has everything going for it, fabulous beaches, lovely villages, wonderful views, Chania is lovely to walk around day and night. There is even a cinema that does up to date movies, earlier than we get in the UK with Greek subtitles. An experience not to be missed sitting with the locals. We enjoyed the East but not half as much as the South/North West of the Island. You must try that part of the island.
Why not stay in the area between Elounda and Ag Nik then you have the best of both worlds. My holiday in Elounda was the best holiday I have ever had.The hotel was a small family run one with only 34rooms but the other guests that week were great and made the holiday. Its a stunning resort with lots of nice resturants and friendly locals.
