The Louvre has an excellent website which includes interactive views and floorplans.

i just thought somewhere would be a map with a search facility and you could put in the name of a painting etc and it would tell you exactly what floor and the location of it. given that the louvre is immense.

The Louvre immense? An understatement! There is a book "Painting in the Louvre" by Lawrence Gowing, actually there are dozens of books on the Louvre, just browse Amazon. They tend to be on the pricey side but then you can get the second hand offers.

Otherwise, the Louvre is arranged in 'time periods' details available on the Louvre web site, so if you know roughly what time period the paintings you wish to see were painted, then you can plan accordingly.

If you want to see the Mona Lisa, then you will have a very long walk and then you will crane your neck trying to get a glimpse over the heads of hundreds of people. In the words of my children who were 5 and 11 at the time, "Is that it?". They enjoyed the visit immensely but did complain about their feet for months afterwards!
