on longhaul trips. We are flying to Mexico with thomas cook and have opted for standard seats as to book the upgrade to premium seats was over £300.00 each. Just wondered if when we arrive at check it is worth asking if we could upgrade for free. If there is any spare premium seats would it be free on a first come first served basis or would they rather leave them empty than upgrade people for free.
Cheers Dawn
I'm not sure about Thomas Cook, but scheduled airlines will sometimes upgrade for free. I always ask but have only been lucky once. I flew to Canada a couple of years ago in premium economy with Condor (Thomas Cook in Germany) and they announced just after takeoff that there were seats left in Premium economy if anyone wanted to pay the €300 extra. As it is many years since I flew charter from the UK I can't really say but I would guess that airlines are not very happy about giving seats away for free. No harm in asking though.
Hi Dawn ... you may be best checking out or posting in the
I've been upgraded for free on a thomas cook flight, we had a long haul plane from spain to manchester, because we were delayed... there were no seats left, and a child and parent were split up, my mum and I were sat together, as my brother was upgraded.... they kept the curtain open, so he kept turning round and pulling tongues (Shame he was 25 and I was 18!) the stewardess came round and said if I wanted to put my brother in his place, help a family out and upgrade for free, we could swap... my brother's face was a picture! The man next to me swapped seats so my mum and I sat next to eachother in premium, and my brother had a face on him the whole way home!
Also refer to the answers on the Caribbean thread. The chances of a free upgrade on your flights is zero.

The chance of a free upgrade on charters is nil, likewise letting you sit on an extra leg room seat when a charge is applicable for this facility. It's understandable as those that had forked out extra would not be best pleased and air rage might follow !!!! Alan
I agree with Gramps, I don't think people who have paid for an upgrade would be too pleased to find out that others had gotten it free.
