Very pleasant island with some good sandy beaches, not too touristy. Stayed here about 8 years ago but probably not changed much. Due to its relative isolation from other islands no boat trips were available, also being so far north it has a short tourist season with lower temperatures than most Greek islands. Much better than the UK though
In fact, why am I still sitting here? If Symi vanishes, I would go to Thassos every time.
And the World's best olives. Yes, you can get them in Waitrose.
What's the weather like there in early to mid September?
Should be pleasant enough, almost certainly better than the UK but this far north in Greece there are no guarantees, you may well see some rain
As other's have said it is a working Town, and I was worried it would be a bit too "industrial", but we didn't have to worry. The port is a little way from the main street. We did loads of walking up to the acropalis, temple of Athena and the ampitheatre. The pine forests are gorgeous and the scenery spectacular, and we enjoyed an organised walk with a local guide. The local honey is fantastic! We saw marble quarries, and in fact there is marble everywhere, on the beach, on the roads and on the paths.
We also enjoyed an island tour and stopped at Alikes, which has two pretty bays, Limenaria, which was also very nice. And there were other stops on the way.
We took a boat trip to Golden Beach, and to be honest I was disappointed with it, it wasn't as nice as I thought it would be, and we were glad that we were staying in Thassos town. There is so much to do in the town, lots of restaurants, cafe bars and shops, there is an olde worlde feel to it with cobbled streets and windy roads.
The town beach was the largest of the beaches, and did get quite crowded, but we walked round to a beach past the old boat yard, this was only quite a tiny beach, but was very pretty, and there was a nice bar overlooking the ocean.
We travelled at the beginning of September and we had a really bad thunderstorm one day, and a couple of mornings/afternoons were cloudy, but on the whole is was very pleasant, and lovely walking weather.
Any questions, please feel free to ask, as you can see I could talk all day about the place!
Have just booked a week in September in Thassos Town, staying at the Aberdeen Studios, via Kosmos. I only booked this because of excellent reviews on another holiday website so if anyone here can reassure me I've done the right thing then please feel free to do so!
any members able to offer a review on this property please use following link
Carol and Vassillis are great hosts and Vassillis is a character to say the least!
Thinking of going to Thassos first week in June. What sort of weather can we expect? Thanks. Gx
Being the most Northern of the Greek islands May can be a bit unpredictable but as you get into June the weather is usually perfect and the spring/early summer flowers are everywhere and the sea temperature is getting warmer.
