Hello Maria we are off to our place in icmeler :) about the same time as you and would recommend hiring a car especially if you're paying for transfers to Marmaris you can collect your car at Dalaman airport and return it to the airport saving cost of transfers. The price is about £25 per day depending on car type / size. The drive to Marmaris is a good way to become accustomed to driving there and once your in Marmaris it doesn't take long to get into the swing of things it's great to have the freedom to explore the country side and different resorts. We have rented from Koral previously but Icmeler on line also offer a car hire service we will be booking a car later this week once we have booked flights. http://www.koraltravel.com or http://www.icmeleronline.com/icmeler_rent_a_car.php. Hope its ok to include these links. We have not driven to Bodrum or Gumbet so can't offer any advice on that sorry. Petrol is more costly than here and they serve you no self service. Another advantage is having the ability to drive out to restaurants in the country side and eat with Turkish families in a less touristy setting. Hope that helps, best of luck what ever you decide to do. Michael and Jill.

I have driven to Bodrum, it takes about 2 3/4 hrs.... the road is dual carriageway to Yatagan where you turn to Bodrum. This road is single carriageway through Milas and then becomes dual again pass the airport to Bodrum itself. We went up and back comfortably in one day and didnt speed to much!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't recommend it, the roads are not very even they can have pot holes and loose gravel not to mention getting used to different driving conditions on unfamiliar roads. Assuming that you are going during the holiday season you probably would not want to wear leathers in that heat, even a low speed slip up on loose gravel with out protective clothing could result in serious injuries and a ruined holiday at the least. I would only consider it if you were used to riding a motor bike and was prepared to wear crash helmet and protective clothing, which so few seem to do whilst on holiday. I would say stick with the dolmus, or hire a car which may not cost as much as you think remember you can deduct the cost of airport transfers if you pick up and return the car at the airport. Hope that's of some help and sorry to put a damper on your idea, best of luck Michael
