To answer the original question "What is the best thing about Tenerife?" and having just come back from a week in Los Gigantes, I would say that for us, it is the light, which is a commodity sorely missed during a British winter... ..global warming or not.

To sit in the Lido under a clear blue sky, with the Atlantic waves crashing beside you, the cliffs towering in the background, and the sun warming your bones is a joy.

To see La Gomera in the distance and marvel that it is nearly as far away as France is from England, and for a couple of days this year, even see La Palma (which we had never seen from Tenerife before). To see all the boats going to and fro, and to go on a trip to see the whales and dolphins.

To walk uphill and downhill round the resort, with its colourful flowers everywhere, and round the coast (including the splendid new path round the Barcelo Santiago) as far as Playa la Arena, with a grandstand view of the waves, and fresh air in your lungs.

To share this with tourists from many countries who are all there to enjoy themselves and take home memories of the island.

Yes, I would hate to stay in a tower block in a 24 hour noisy resort.....but different people like different things, and what we all like on holiday is to do something we enjoy, whether that means seeking beauty and solitude, or parties and companionship

Acorncup your post has almost sent me drooling to be in Tenerife again!
I have to wait till November to get back there, like you said to feel the sun warming your bones whilst the UK is still in the dark is soooo nice!
Does anyone else think Tenerife has a apecial smell? As soon as I climb out the aeroplane I get that same lovely familiar smell, its like the air is sweet and floral, - its hard to describe but I smell it everytime!!

Yes I agree with the smell, I thought I was going bonkers.

Have been in two minds recently,whether to plan another holiday in Tenerife this year or not,for various reasons...have to say none particularly relating to the island itself though!...but have a feeling that somehow, I might be planning another trip for later this year. Reading the input from everyone on here,and most recently from Acorncup,I just don't think I'll be able to resist it somehow!

Yes Acorncup you have a way with words,I might have a short break in March on my own in Tenerife and sample what you wrote.

oo-er.....I'm all overcome been waxing lyrical........I don't say it's the only place in the world that's nice....but it is relatively easy and economical to get to

I agree with Acorccump's sentiments. I've been going since the mid 90's and the first thing that srtuck me on my first was the light. We went in February and I found it hard to believe that just a few short hours later, I was getting off a plane into a stunninly bright place, with blue sky and the warmth too.

I ahve to say that the temperature also is a big plus for me. I tend to go MArch and September, when the weather in the uk is not quite so good and in March it really cheers me up and sets me up for the summer.

HAve been lucky enough to go twice in winter now, Christmas 2005, and just after new year this year. It was great

In fact, I like it so much that I don't bother with other places any more, though I have travelled more widely in the past.

Me and my family adore Tenerife, infact my husband and I would inventually love to settle there. Everyone has their own opion though, we have tried alot of holiday resorts but always return to Tenerife.

This will be my first visit to Tenerife. Like acorncup I am too in my glory years I hear that Playa de las Americas is well----lively. Could you reccomend the place where you stayed please it sounds just my cup of tea!!! Hubby and I love walking , SUN ++++ good dining (preferably cheaply!!) and most of all that feel good factor (I think its called seratonin or something) of sitting in the fresh air and sunshine aaahhhh!!!

Where was I -oh yes somewhere nice to stay recommendations please for a Tenerife ""virgin"

I am just back from the Colon 2 apts in Playa de las Americas, they are beautiful apartments which we booked through Thomsons, they are in a nice situation, just up from the promenade at the beach where the waves are wild and all the surfers go, its a lovely part of the resort with loads of good eating places including good quality, Italian, Tapas, Chinese, and British and everything in between a lot of places have entertainment and you are 5 minutes walk from a fabby selection of shops. at the Santiago complex

Best place for me in Tenerife is Playa De Las Americas.

People slate the resort but it has many different sides to it. I normally stay in the Parque de la Paz, a three star property in amongst all the 4-5 star hotels - its a really really nice area - good bars, shops, nice seafront, nice beach.

I would go as far as to say that it is the most upmarket area of a resort I have ever seen and I have travelled to Australia, Spain (Balearics, Mainland & Canaries), Greece and many other places.

I can honestly recommend this area of Las Americas without any fear of those I recommended it to being dissapointed.

Very good resort and a very nice island.

Diversity.....

That is the best thing about Tenerife.

If you want a party "happening" type holiday it's there.
If you want a quiet relaxing holiday you can find it, just look a little further than PDLA.

All things to all (wo)men, with the sun.
That's why we all keep going back.

For me it's the diversity - north geen and lush - south dry and arid - black sand beaches - golden beaches - rock and pebble beaches - quiet resorts - in your face tourism - discrete exclusive restaurants - wall-to-wall all you can eat - resorts that attract families - those that attract couples - and those which are designer made for youngsters wanting to pub and club all night long.
One things for sure though . . . . .there is sooooo much more to Tenerife than PDLA and Los Cris' - there is literally something for everyone!
