As you pointed out, the 2nd week is the bank holiday week and school holidays. Many families will travel for one week for your 2nd week, so the flights back could well be full, as well as the accommodation. You may still get a deal (cancellations happen up to the last minute) but if you could travel a week earlier, you would have much more chance. You will need to be very flexible in where you want to go.

I too usually book a long time in advance to make sure I get what I want but have done one very last minute holiday due to unusual circumstances one year. We booked on the Friday and went on the Sunday!! I found the whole thing a bit hair-raising, as I like to plan things but we did get a very good deal. It did teach me that I don't need to pack 3 weeks in advance and we had a great holiday.

It depends really on how much you want to spend and what you want from the holiday.

Olympic holidays are currently coming in at just over £200.00 for a fortnight in Kos going on the 19 May from Gatwick and they're always worth a look as they're pretty cheap for Greece. Kosmar and Libra are also at the cheaper end. It's worth remembering that if you book close to departure the you will pay a ticket on departure charge c. £15.00 a head so it's probably best to try and get booked 3 weeks in advance.

You don't really get the £99 the following day bargins anymore.

just don't go to an agent would be my advice. we had a cash crisis a couple of years ago due to unforseen house expenses and nearly ended up forfitting our hols, instead we decided to book a last minute. all the travel agents we went to promised great deals on the famous window cards, but once through the doors we quickly realised that unless you were a party of 5 adults willing to share a studio the prices were nothing like those quoted. suddenly £129 had turned into £450 per person, and that's before all the little extras like in flight meals etc. if you can book on line you are in complete control over all the bookable extras which you may or may not require and you are able to see exactly how the price is compiled. oh and one last very important point, if you are looking for a nice resort and have fixed ideas, as most of us do, about what you like, do not book an allocation on arrival-however cheap it is! £150 each for 2 weeks will quickly loose it's appeal when the transfer bus drops you both in club 18-30 central /a set of ''peaceful'' apartments 5 miles away from the nearest sign of life!!!!!!!!!!!!!! as it happened we got lucky and ended up finding a lovely little hotel in corfu, downside was it was right by the airport (which we spent 4 extra hours in on the return leg, thanks to our good friends at excel airways!) but hey, we paid £225 each and really did have one the best holidays we have had to date...so it can be a good way of holidaying when money is a little tight and it's good fun looking for the perfect trip! for websites try first choice where you can deselect alot of add-ons such as extra baggage, meals in-flight etc to bring the final price down, all the major op's actually carry a deals page for last minute decision makers such as yourself, kosmar are cheap but with them, you have to have sense of humour...

We've had good experiences with Olympic, they often have cheap deals and their accomodation seems to be quite decent.
