Just to advise that if you buy a holiday home in France, and ultimately decide to sell it, the Government takes a massive 30% share in tax of the sale price.

You will still be liable to pay local taxes on the property even if you are not in residence.

Now for the positive bit! Health care in France is tremendous, and may even be better and quicker than that offered by the NHS. You will have to register with a doc locally, and use your EHIC. I believe that there is an E112 form that covers health care for UK residents living abroad, and you might care to investigate this further.
