Hi wife and I are considering semigrating , ie keeping a door ajar with a foot in it.Kids have gone so downsizing , just us both and the dog.We are thinking about 2nd home in spain , france or portugal , handy for the ferries back to the uk will proably make it france.
Heres the thing , wife gets regular treatment thats needed on the nhs , dont want to lose the ability to get nhs treatment. She is also disabled so gets a couple of benefits also.
So gurus how long can we stay out of the uk at a time , and how long do we need to be back inbetween visits to the uk home to continue getting treatment , meds , and dla benefits for the better half.....this is pretty conditional on affording the dual houses as the holiday home will be rented to pay for its upkeep when we are not there.
Just to advise that if you buy a holiday home in France, and ultimately decide to sell it, the Government takes a massive 30% share in tax of the sale price.
You will still be liable to pay local taxes on the property even if you are not in residence.
Now for the positive bit! Health care in France is tremendous, and may even be better and quicker than that offered by the NHS. You will have to register with a doc locally, and use your EHIC. I believe that there is an E112 form that covers health care for UK residents living abroad, and you might care to investigate this further.
All the best with whatever you decide.
