This hotel is part of the Maestral hotels group including the nearby Adriatica and Uvula, whose facilities including an indoor pool and 'wellness centre' are available for your use. It is basically a former government hotel, but has been renovated and provides an excellent base from which to explore Dubrovnik's old town and other interesting places in Croatia, also there are tours to Montenegro and Mostar in Bosnia - both worth doing. The hotel is very clean and comfortable with air-conditioning and satellite TV. The bath is worthy of the name and there is plenty of hot water. Towels are changed every day and your room is made up early in the morning whilst you breakfast.
There are NO facilities for children - so don't disappoint your children and stay elsewhere - but the hotel caters for couples, singles (mostly mature) and tour groups. The bar is competitively priced and the terrace overlooks the sea. The hotel has its own pebble beach, and there is a beautiful walk around the adjoining promentary - mostly flat.
Breakfast is a buffet affair - probably the hotel's idea of bacon and egg and sausage will not appeal to UK visitors! But it is generous and relaxed. We stayed half-board, and this reflects the weakest part of the hotel's facilities. The buffet is imaginative, there are lots of salad veg and fresh fruit, but the cooked dishes are of variable quality and the serving area is cramped. You are placed at a table for your stay for the evening meal - breakfast is sit where you like. However, we did not go short of food, and as Dubrovnik is quite pricey for dinner out, we were glad to be at the hotel.
We did not have any entertainment - low season - but understand there is live music later in the summer.
The hotel staff were very friendly and if you started your conversation with a smile, they couldn't do enough for you. There is a small paperback library (70% English books), free safe deposit facilities at reception (you just need to ask) and you can buy bus tickets from reception too. The no.4 bus goes from outside the front door, and is regular throughout the day. Reception has copies of the timetable for you to take with you.
Please note that although there are 3 floors and a lower ground floor for the restaurant and bar/terrace, there are NO lifts!
This is quite an intimate hotel and if you are an independent-minded traveller you will find it to your liking. The 18-30s crowd have nothing to gain from this place and so stay away ... hence it's quiet and rather on its best behaviour -nothing wrong in that!
I would recommend it for mature (in behaviour not in age) travellers, and had a very pleasant time. I'd certainly book to come back - good value for money, a good night's sleep and all Dubrovnik within easy reach.
