We have recently stayed at the Porto Rethymno Hotel. The hotel was in a very central position.
The hotel was very clean and the food was of good quality. The food was waiter service most nights, but some nights when it was a theme night, it was buffet service. In relation to the waiter service, this was for main courses only, you helped yourself to starters and desserts. There was a choice of three main courses which were displayed in dishes outstanding the dining room for people to see what they consisted of. It was a different menu every night.
My only criticism with this hotel was all public ares sment of cigarette/cigar smoke. The hotel does not operate a "no smoking" policy in public areas. The dining room had a "no smoking" section which was on the small side and sometimes you had difficulty getting a table. The smoking area was very extensive, and there was an outside terrace overlooking the pool which was lovely, but yet again, people were smoking. The dining room always smelt of cigarette smoke.

We have just got back from this lovely hotel. The staff are fantastic and the food is excellent. The swimming pool is very small. But the sunbeds opposite the hotel on the beach are free.
Towels are available for a deposit of 7.50 euro each and changed every 2 days. Safety deposit boxes are also free. We had paid for a sea view room, but only managed to get a side sea view.
We were on the 6 th floor and the view from the balcony was of some untidy and ugly flats. The beach is across a very busy road.

The Hotel is spotlessly clean. We had a large room on the first flooor overlooking the pool. The maid service was excellent. Our beds were always made up and decorated with our hats or glasses and books!
By far the best food of any hotel we have ever stayed in. Fantastic choice of breakfasts even to the point of one tray of boiled eggs being cooked for 4 minutes, and another for 8. Dinner was wonderful, if you did not want to eat from the main menu which had a choice of three dishes (one vegetarian), you could eat from the buffet which was huge. We had two special nights during our weeks stay, one asian buffet, and one greek night. Huge barbeques out by the pool-- Fantastic.
Quite a busy road to cross to the beach, but a large beach, free sunbeds and parasols, and free beach towels (changed evry two days) made the trip worthwhile.
Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Our flight home was not until the early hours so we arranged a late checkout at a cost of 25euro and were able to keep the room until our departure at 12.45pm.
Definitely on our list for another visit.

We arrived at Chania airport and cleared the terminal building within 40 minutes for the 1 hour air conditioned coach trip to the Rethymno resort.
The hotel Porto Rethymno is a multi-national hotel central to a multitude of bars, shops, mini-markets, restaurants and tavernas. It is situated directly opposite the clean, sandy beach where the hotel provides free sunbeds and parasols for its guests, plus beach towels (5 Euro returnable deposit)
Bathing is perfectly safe provided you take note of the green/red flag system policed by red tee-shirted lifeguards. Even on red flag days people enjoyed jumping waves close to shore but swimming is prohibited. Invest in a pair of flip flops for the beach, or you'll skip the light fantastic from sunbed to sea! (The sand can get very hot)
The Hotel Porto Rethymno accommodation was spotlessly clean, well maintained with excellent air conditioning and the staff friendly and courteous.
The swimming pools were small but adequate and would prove popular for parents with small children.
The food quality and choice with a la carte: Chinese, Greek and Italian theme nights, puts this hotel in the top 3 for food that we've visited over the years.
The hotel bar prices were reasonable for a '4 star plus' establishment - i.e. cocktails 5.50 Euro, large beer 3.90 Euro.
Our only cautionary note is with regards to the room allocation lottery - we paid for a full sea view, but on arrival got a 5th floor side sea view overlooking apartment blocks. After complaining to reception, we had to wait 3 days for the full sea view we had paid for. NB, Some first floor front elevation room views can be obscured by the reception roofline.
