Located in the heart of the country, the capital Madrid is Spain's beating heart. The city ticks a lot of boxes for a long weekend, ranging from history and culture to sports and bars while it would take a life time to try every restaurant.
If your time is limited then core attractions include the Prado Museum which has a wide range of works by some of the finest Spanish artists including Velazguez, Goya and El Greco. There's enough to see in the gallery to take a whole day but those looking for something different should head to the El Rastro Market, held every Sunday by the La Latina metro. The market claims to be the largest open-air one in Europe and is particularly known for its leather bags. Once you're bored of bartering then head back to La Lastina district which is known for its tapas. Anyone looking for a more relaxed time should visit the Parque del Retiro for a little peace and quiet.
Other attractions include the Gran Via for shopping and the theatre while anyone with even the vaguest interest in football will know El Bernabeu Stadium is home to Real Madrid. Those looking to eat should consider the Plaza Mayor square where there are several restaurants while the Plaza Santa Ana is known for its tapas bars and lively night life.
