This was our first ever cruise (and hopefully not our last) so cannot compare this to other cruise ships. We did the 4 night cruise (3 days)which calls at Nassau and Castaway Cay and then a day at sea.
We had a fantastic time ! This was a surprise (for the kids) add on trip to our Orlando holiday. We booked through a US website as it is much cheaper than booking in the UK. The 4 night is only fractionally more than the 3 night, and worth every penny.....believe me you will still be wishing you had just another day on the 4 night, as you are just beginning to get into things.
I avidly subscribed to the cruise section of the American 'Dis Board' website ALOT before we went and this is a real help for getting information and advice on all things relating to this cruise - can't recommend it highly enough.
The cruise terminal its self is fantastic - light and airy with seating area that has kids cartoons playing. There is a model of the boat and small cafe. Here you book in, which isn't too bad for Brits as NON US citizens have their own queue, and check in desk and as you might guess, we are in the minority.
It is definitely worth getting to the port early. The secure carpark opens at 10am prompt (there is parking across the way if you do arrive too early). By getting there early you will avoid any queueing, can get the kids confirmation of kids club booking done in the terminal, and ensure the earliest boarding call to get on the ship. You are supposed to board from 12 noon but in actual fact we (being amongst the first at check in) were boarded at 11.45am.
As you walk on the ship your family's name is called out and you are greeted on board by the crew. Then you can go immeadiately for lunch at one of two restaurants.. and then for a swim in the pools (this is when the Mickey pool and others will be at their quietest all trip )! Besure you take your swimming costumes in your hand luggage - you don't need towels these are provided FOC! You cannot access your room until 1.30pm prompt but this soon comes round. Your luggage will magically arrive sometime after that. Interesting to note you can get almost any goods delivered postally to your room including, gift baskets, from sources other than Disney. We had our pirate costumes delivered from a US website.
Accommodation :We had a cat 9 porthole cabin - this was lovely - we originally had booked an inside cabin but we were glad we decided to up grade ourselves at the last minute. The bed was comfy and our room attendent was great. The kids loved their fold down bunk bed and were hooked on the TV playing endless cartoons !There was plenty of storage; double wardrobe , draws, dressing table and steamer trunk. There is a pull out drying rail above the bath- plenty of shelving in the split bathroom.
Food : You are put on a dining rotation Early or Late. We had chosen the early on recommendation, but this was the only downside of the trip - we ended up on the earliest dining time 5.30pm - this was a nightmare as we always had to finish what we were doing in the afternoon early to get ready, and all our meal times were too close together - the kids were consequently never hungry, and we never had a real appetite. Having said that, we could have ended up on the latest of the Late dining 8.30pm - and this may have bought its own problems. However, whatever, rotation you end up on you do not miss the main shows as these are repeated to fit in with the dining rotations. With evening meal you are assigned a head server, and assistant server who will be with you for evening meal each day of your trip. For the meals themselves you rotate around the 3 main restaurants. The restaurants all have their own unique themeing; our kids loved the Aminators ' Palate the best, as this had a cartoon theme; and it was great to watch the whole restaurant change slowly through the meal from black and white, to colour !
One night of the cruise is Pirates night, and you are encouraged to dress as pirates. We were disappointed to find that not too many people made the effort (though it is not well publicised I supposed) We had bought some pirate T-shirts for the occasion because we didn't want to go too over board - but we did want to join in ! However they do provide a bandana for everyone (you get to keep)to get into the spirit of the evening.
The food on board of course is excellent - the Servers make a special effort to ensure that the fussy eaters (and the kids !) are catered for. We also tried the adult only restaurant Palo for brunch which I must say was well worth the extra $10pp.
We had a full breakfast (self) served in the restaurant the first day, but after that we ended up having breakfast in our room as there is no charge for room service (just tip $1or $2)- this suited us much better as it gave us more time, and wasn't such an ordeal food wise (bear in mind our early dinner and having to fit in lunch in between !)
Entertainment was first class - always something going on, and the shows were almost West End quality ! We couldn't keep the children out of the kids clubs (open from 9.00am to 12 midnight..and they feed them if they want to stay over lunch). There is no problem getting a place in the clubs - Disney only allow a set number of kids of a certain age on the ship so these can never be over subscribed.
We didn't do any excursions but we did take our selves to the Pirate museum in Nassau (cheap and excellent) - turn right off the boat, second row of streets back (about 5-10mins walk). It has an excellent Pirate Pub and shop attached.
Castaway Cay is Disneys own fantastic beach - we had a lovely day there (a tip - don't settle on the very first bit of beach, but walk past the main food area for another 3-4 mins opposite the last set of shops ...much quieter and roomier than the first section !)Only down side was they don't serve coffee on CC - other than that food and drink is fantastic. Be sure to get your last drinks / food /icecream orders in around 2.30pm as they start packing everything away at least an hour before you are due back on board.
Our last day at sea was very relaxing...especially since the kids had disappeared to the clubs - though the ship always sails full.... it never feels crowded and you can always get somewhere to sit, even on sea days. All through the day there are soft drinks, fruit, icecream, pizza, hot dogs on tap ...childrens' heaven !Everywhere is kept clean & tidy and the crew are so friendly.
On the last evening you give the EXPECTED tips - there are 4 positions to be tipped, and not tipping is not really an option. Amount of tips are set out on the DCL website (though you are free to pay more)and are per person regardless of age, or whether you used the restaurant each night. Tips do not have to be paid in cash - they can be charged to your on board account and printed dockets are given to you to put in your (Disney provided)tipping envelopes.
The last morning you are back in Canaveral and here is probably the worst bit ! You have to report to US immigration at 6.00am in one of the ship's theatres..the whole family must be up and dressed for this(its not a Disney imposed ruling but I expect it helps get people up and off the ship early though - ready for the next sailing !).The whole ship has to be cleared before anyone can disembark. Tea , coffee and other refreshments are available to help ease the pain. After this you have your last breakfast aboard(no room service available last morning so served in the restaurant). Then you are off the ship between 7.30am - 8.30am depending on how much of a hurry you are in.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Disney cruise - just wish it had been longer - ca't recommend it enough if you have children (and even if you don't !).
