We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We embarked at Beijing and the ship called at Shanghai, Vietnam (twice) , Hiroshima, Busan (South Korea), Bangkok, and Hong Kong, we disembarked at Singapore. Both embarkation and disembarkation were very smooth and hassle free. The cruise lasted for 16 days, a couple to times we had 2 consecutive days at sea which were quite boring, and I couldn’t quite fight off the feeling of being in a very luxurious prison, . This is a very large ship and often docks some way from the main ports, but we did not find this a problem, and had enough time at each port.
It is easy to find your way round the ship and the décor and level of cleanliness is very good. Indeed they were constantly cleaning and painting. There were no outbreaks of Norovirus on this trip but a lot of people had colds. The seating in the public areas was comfortable and more than adequate. I particularly liked the promenade deck where walking 2 and a half times round the ship equals a mile As well as all the usual activities the ship had an art gallery and “art auctionsâ€, where you can bid for a garishly coloured masterpiece which can be shipped to anywhere in the world. The evening entertainment – song and dance shows, conjurers etc was pretty good and helped to fill the time.
We ate in the various dining rooms a few times, but found the portions rather too large. The Horizon Court buffet area got very overcrowded at times, but this is due to bad design, too many tables seating 6 or 8, curved screens , and could easily be remedied by having more smaller tables. On the whole the food was delicious with an excellent choice of dishes, and plenty of fresh fruit. Vegetables were not a strong point. It must take real skill to give corn on the cob such a disgusting taste and slimy texture. I tried the “iced teaâ€, expecting something like the Lipton’s bottled iced tea, big mistake. One morning it was quiet so I ordered an omelette, this involved the server filling out a form with many tick boxes. Why? I gave up and had a fried egg instead. There were special exotic fruit, pastry and seafood buffets, and pub lunches, all of which we tried and enjoyed. I also loved the afternoon teas.
The cabin was small but adequate with plenty of storage space, and very comfortable . All the crew and staff we came in contact with were polite and friendly.
We didn’t go on any of the excursions organised by the ship, and the ports have been reviewed very well elsewhere, so I won’t to into too much detail. Busan - we got the shuttle bus into the town and explored the shops and fish market, there was a bit of a scramble to get onto the bus going back. But it was an interesting and entertaining day. Hong Kong – the shuttle bus dropped us near a hotel in an upmarket shopping centre in Kowloon. We have been to Hong Kong before, so we just did some shopping and took an open topped bus tour, there is a lot to see and do and another day here would have been nice. Shanghai – shuttle bus dropped us off at the very interesting Silk Museum, we then walked along the river front to The Bund, and the main shopping centre, which was a very long way, so we got a rickshaw back. This is one place you really need to explore by taxi or public transport. Bangkok – we got the shuttle bus to Pattaya, a place I had chosen not to visit on a previous trip to Thailand due to its sleazy reputation, but we were pleasantly surprised, looked round the shops and had look at the beach, plenty or restaurants, massage parlours and everything else you’d expect in Thailand. Nagasaki was the one place where the ship docked directly in the town and didn’t need a shuttle bus, it was very easy to find your way around on the trams, and we visited various museums devoted to the atomic bomb, parks, memorials and shops, interesting place, very clean. Nha Trang the highlight of the trip, we booked a trip over the internet which included a river cruise, visit to an embroidery factory, orphanage etc, Very enjoyable Ho Chi Min City - the ship docks a long way from the city, and the coach trip to the city centre takes around 2 hours, however there was a shuttle bus to a nearby town, where we spent a pleasant few hours wandering around the shops, there was supposed to be a market but we never found it!
This cruise line had a poor score in a recent Which survey on customer satisfaction, and apparently there were a lot of complaints on this particular trip – for instance there was no air conditioning on one of the coaches used for the ship’s 2 hour trip into Ho Chi Min city. Personally we did not encounter any problems and everything was entirely satisfactory. Some of the things I’d been concerned about after reading reviews turned out to be fine – for instance the beds were very comfortable, the coffee was quite acceptable (although it varied in strength), and we didn’t feel under pressure to spend, although the shops, casino, organised trips were there is you wanted them. The alcoholic drinks were very expensive and I think that the bottled water for your cabin should have been free, as should the yoga classes and the guided tour of the bridge. Although I can understand the appeal of cruising, it’s not for me and I won’t be going on another one, preferring to fly to my destination.
