I havent personally stayed at the village royal, but i have heard it is an average 2star hotel for Goa, so you will be ok. The pool is quite nice, and i have heard the rooms are kept clean and tidy.
The only downside is it isnt central location, but this shouldnt be a problem as you can get taxis, but dont tell the taxi drivers it is your first trip to Goa as they will try and rip you off.
Take a look around this board and you will find lots of good info especially useful for first timers.

Have a look at Namaste for your trip to Mumbai. they have excellent reviews by those that have used them on here before. I'm using them this year.

Also if you use the search at top of page it will link you to appropriate topics.
It very tempting to do want to do everything trip wise on your first time (I remember it well!) but try and be sensible as you will be surprised how much just one day trip will tire you out!!
Have a great time and look forward to hearing what you thought on your return.

You can get very cheap internal flights from Goa to Mumbai so it might be worth checking them out on the net or through a local agent once you get to Goa. The flight time is less than an hour and if you are only in Goa for a fortnight a 12hr train ride (great fun, tho') may take up precious time.

This link below takes you to the option (Trains between important stations):

If you key in MADGAON (MAO) to MUMBAI (BCT), you can see atleast six trains going at different days and times. BTW, Madgoan train station is about 6/8 kms from Colva Beach.
Local flights are not cheap anymore in India these days.
Hope this helps.
Aj.
Train fare by Mandovi Express (takes 12 hours) is about Rs.300 which is less than a fiver (in pounds). This is for a second class reserved sleeper (also called 2 Tier). Each coupe has six seats and berths. I am guessing air conditioned coaches could be anywhere between 1,200 to 2,000. But the best way to travel in India (for such short distances of 12 hours) is travelling by the second class sleeper. But you have to be careful with your belongings. Someone stole my iPod when I was fast asleep...
The trip to Mumbai by train would take a lot out of your available time in Goa.
If you really want to do Mumbai - why not wait till next year and come through Mumbai on a schedule flight.
Then you could have 2 or 3 nights in Mumbai before coming down to Goa.
Internal flights anywhere in India, with Jet or Kingfisher are = 15,000 Air France/KLM air miles.
It's a bargain - 'cos internal flights in Europe are 20,000 miles.
bed bedin and towels nice clean the pool allso clean all the staff helpfull we had a good time there we would go back liz
