well. when they say satellite, yes, some of the chanels are in english but not all of them, it depends from hotel to hotel....
for hotels, why not go onto something like http://www.thomson.co.uk or http://www.portlandholidays.co.uk and select 5*, i'm sure you will find something!

We went to Gran Canaria 2 years ago and were told that, there were no 5* hotels on Gran Canaria although a couple may have come close in Las Palmas.
You could try renting full/halfboard at the Anfi del Mar but this is a timeshare. They currently are renting weeks for £159 but these are " tasters and you will have to attend a presentation.

i went to playa del ingles a few yrs ago and we stayed at the dunamar and that is definatley a 5* hotel

Check out Playa Meloneras near Maspalomas. All of the hotels there are 4* upwards. There are two Riu hotels, H10 Playa Meloneras Palace and two Gran Hotels at least one of which is definitely 5 * (Gran Hotel Costa Meloneras)

A nice upmarket resort with good shops and restaurants. Should fit the bill exactly
