I think the idea of a book exchange is a great idea
John who owns Mama Cecelias shack near Candolim / Calangute border has a vast selection of books for his visitors to borrow.
I left my old ones with him this year and if i run short i will be calling in in January.
To find it,
if you are coming from Candolim about 500 mtrs before the Hindu temple on the bad bend there is Titos residencia.
go down the lane to the beach.
Walk along the beach about 200 yds and you will see the sign for the shack.
They do a wicked Kashmir Biryani

Last year I took out 22 kilo's of paperback books, all of them were recent releases, I start collecting them months before we go. We tried exchanging them at a shop near the elephant shop, he was only willing to give us 50 rps per book, and he wanted 250 rps to get new ones. Needless to say we didn't swap.
They certainly know how to do business
The Holiday Inn and Mike's Beach Shack were both doing book swaps Dec 2006. It is a good idea, as everyone else's books always look more interesting than the ones I'm reading!
I think most of the hotels and a lot of the shacks have this facility. I always leave my books behind, swap them in if I've run out of reading material. I never that way feel guilty if I leave Goa with a book from the Hotel, as I have generally left 5 or 6 behind in replacement.
can i swap my wife for a book then, not a dictionary though, i don't want to end up with exactly the same thing!!!
