Thanks Denny. Have had a look. There doesn't seem to be suggestions for local places, such as Valladolid, where we had a short stop on way back from Chichen Itza. However, at 3 dollars a bus trip to Tulum looks likely 
wife and i went on the ado bus to akumal to swim with the turtles ,it was a great cheap day out.
