I would recommend Guardamar del Segura. It is a small town which is popular with Spanish holiday makers. There are hundreds of bars and restaurants to choose from with varied menus and prices, and the place is small enough to manage on foot.

The beaches are enormous, so they never get busy, and there are protected sand dunes.

Guardamar is about a 20 minute drive south of Alicante airport.

If you are looking for a rental apartment in Guardamar, make sure that it is situated on the ‘beach' side of the N332 and not in on of the neighbouring urbanizations.

calpe would be ideal, stay on the old town side. Gorgeous beach and plenty of bars and eateries. I stayed there 3 years ago and loved it.

Try Gran Alacant. International but plenty of Spanish bars/restaurants to be found. Superb beach close by. Won't be busy in mid May and there is only one night club. Cracking views of the sea and Alicante from the hill. 10 minutes from the airport but little or no aircraft noise and 15 minutes to Alicante city centre which is a must visit. Plenty of self catering accommodation to be found from small apartments to big villas with private pools and everything in between.
