Don't take travellers cheques, the commission can be very high on these. I always take sterling cash and change it there and also use ATM's which are widely available.

we took stirling and our nationwide flexi card, well worth taking this card

depends also where you change your travellers cheques, we have been going to turkey since 1996 and never once been charged commision

We always taka a little lira for the first day plus some in Sterling and get the rest fro the ATMs. We have a Nationwide account so we don't get charged for withdrawing money.

I take £50 in Lira to get me going over there and the rest in English money, split the English money into the amount of days I am there as well.

I always take as many £10 notes as I can as there handy for the market and the rest in £20 notes.

I have taken a small amount in Lira but the rest in sterling cash. Also, be aware that nationwide are starting to charge for the use of their card abroad, so all of us who have an account for using abroad will be finding that they will be charging. . . it was announced a couple of weeks ago.

you will find that Turkey is not one of them they are charging :)

correct - nationwide card can still be used free in the euro zone INC turkey

Hi
I've not been to Turkey before but i'm going in September, i'm a little confused about the money, can i use stirling over there or do i just take it and exchange it over there? thanks :think

Hi Alexfan. Lots of places take sterling for stuff - even restaurants. Depending on where you are going what i tend to do is change my sterling to lira while I am there but pay for trips and hotel bar bills etc. with sterling. Larger resorts often have menu prices in euros as well just to confuse!

Will i get get a better rate or "more for my money" if i pay with sterling? thanks

You'll find many will accept your sterling. In the markets you'll find offers like 3 for a tenner etc. Many shops will also accept sterling. However you must check the rate they are using, there are many honest ones who will check the rate on the internet before you pay but of course there are others who will take advantage of your situation. I always ask the price in lira and then decide which I will pay with. So take care.

We took a small amount of lira and the rest in sterling plus we had our cards (never used ) best rate we got was 249 over there lowest was 240 , we used Lira all the time , last yr the Turks were asking for the Euro they never mentioned it this yr .

WE have just returned from olu deniz . We took a small amount in Lira and the rest in sterling we changed our money in rate was around 2.47 tl to the pound we noticed it did fluctuate and Wensday and Thursday seemed to have the best price for changing....

as you have just returned can you comment on prices for meals etc please? many thanks

I'm still in the med!!

English breakfast (if that is your fancy) - 5YTL (2 quid!!)

typical meal - 15 to 25 YTL

Drinks - Efes 4YTL

Diet coke - 5YTL

You can spend a lot more - but equally you can spend a lot less - depends what you want! And as has been said, virtually all venues will accept Euro, Lira or GBP and they calculate exchange at quite a good rate.

OH BTW

Currently

we got 2.35 at Thomas Cook before we left

local bureau and supermarkets are offering between 2.4 and 2.46

banks - by taking money out of ATM and then my OH checked her account online - 2.50

The only problem we have encountered is that some turkish bank machines don't recognise her card but there are loads of HSBC machines which don't have any problems.

Your best to take a small amount of lira to get you through the first couple of days ,then change sterling into lira over there .You will get a better rate of exchange then .Dont have euros ,sterling ,lira ,as you will lose out everytime . Not to sure about fivers ,i have always found they look at you kind of funny when you use them and make sure all your notes are in good condition with no tears or writng on them ,the just wont except them.
