They are generally a good deal, to get your transfer bus you have to go the the Singapore stopover desk in the arrivals hall and they will arrange the minibus for you- took about 20 mins for us but they were waiting for a couple of other people off another flight. All very easy really- they will let you know what time they will pick you up at this point as well.
Our must dos were the Night Safari (skip the tram for a start and walk then do tram later when q's have gone), we loved the East Coast park as well, Asian Civilisations Museum was great as well- we didn't like the price of beer! although you can find cheaper deals at the hawker markets which are fab and cheap in comparison.
Get yourself the tourist pass for the transport system- you can use on bus and MRT then just swipe as you get on and off- gets you pretty much everywhere. What else we loved was just wandering around in Little India and CHinatown. Not too impressed with Boat/CLarke Quay ( we stayed there)- expensive and masses of people, the touts at the restaurants in Boat Quay are pretty full on but you can play them off against one another to get an even better deal!
We loved Singapore hence we are off again for a stopover
Drink a Singapore Sling in the long bar in the Raffles Hotel.
If you like orchids there are some beautiful examples in the National Orchid Garden situated within the Botanic Gardens.
Like the previous poster said just wandering around is great even though you may have to keep popping inside airconditioned buildings to cool off.
I have used the Singapore stopover program twice now, both times everything ran smoothly, the first time I only had to wait a couple of minutes for transportation from the airport the second time about 15mins.
She wishes she had booked the stop off on the way back.
I am not sure if this was possible when she booked, but may be an option for you.
Have got everything booked now but it's nice to be reasured. Now i'm wondering whether to book the stopover on the return leg aswell decisions decisions
Not going till sept.but can't wait!
Thanks,Mamxcat
you do get Singapore Airways free hop on/off bus and that is worth while.
The first Universal Studios in Asia is now open in Singapore at Sentosa island. The new Sands Marina Bay Resort Casino is going to open in May, it consists of 3 skyscrapers and a huge sky garden connecting the roof of the 3 buildings, the view from there should be fantastic!
There are some good tips already posted for a stopover. I will second Judith's advice regarding the Bum boat trip and seeing the Orchids. You must also:
Eat in a hawker centre
Eat in a good banana leaf restaurant in Little India
Eat in Chinatown
Unfortunately, I have no memory for restaurant names.
Please also note that it is the Singapore Grand Prix (last week September) - beware of high prices / full hotels if you do a stopover on the return. Singapore remains busy immediately after the GP and visitors from Europe tend to extend their SE Asia trip by visiting other destinations (such as Thailand and Bali) too!
We are also in Bali from 16th September, but will fly Mayaysian and stop over in KL on the return leg (although Singapore or Bangkok would have been preferred). We felt that Bangkok was too uncertain and Singapore too busy.
Enjoy Bali

I have just found this thread and we are planning 4 nights in Singapore and 8 in Bali. Having never done a long haul trip we have decided to fly Singapore Airlines from London. My problem is deciding in which hotel to stay in, our travel agent gave us a good deal with the Novotel, stay 3 nights and get 1 free. The reviews are mixed, can anyone recommend a nice 4*, not too far from the city centre, we have looked at the Fairmont as well.
the Novotel is in a great position. Have stayed there( before it became Novotel). When we were last in Singapore we went in and asked to see a room. It was a standard room and looked ok to me. I would recommend Traders as well. Great hotel but not in as good a position as Novotel. However, pool area is great and they have a superb award winning restaurant.
I did post earlier on this thread she wished she could stop off in Singapore on the way back.
Well she got her wish!
Stranded for 8 days due to the Ash and left to their own devices with 3 children.
They had to find their own hotels and even had to buy clothes due to their suitcases being at the airport as they were only meant to be in Changi for 2 hours.
Even when the UK airspace opened on Thursday evening and SIA operating 3 flights a day to Heathrow on A380s it was Monday before they got back to the UK.
I am posting this as a warning in case the Ash situation happens again.Be prepared for extra cost that you will incur.
We stayed at the Novotel last year and were pleased with it. The location is perfect and the rooms more than adequate - mind you we were upgraded to a premium room so don't know how this differs from the standard room. Breakfast was pricey, but this was on our way home from a trip to Oz and funds were running short!! There were plenty of places outside the hotel for breakfast so that was not a problem. We have also stayed at the Pan Pacific which is a super hotel and part of the deal included breakfast - scrumptious, and is not too far from the underground, but in my opinion if you want location then it has to be the Novotel.
