Change money at the airport, we normally change £20 (which is more than enough) poor exchange rate. Then when you get to your resort find the Elephant Shop to change your cash.

You can pay when you arrive at your hotel and change money, or stop at the Elephant shop on the way. It only takes a few moments to chane up as long as there are no queues.

I always do this, it's less grief at the airport.

I'm pretty sure the Elephant Shop will be open in Candolim.

If you're worried you could always take your ATM card and just stop at a Cash Machine.

I have said this on many posts. You CAN get rupees at the travel agents , try asking at a few. We have had ours from Travelcare in the past and this year T Cook said they could get them.
obviously a poor rate though

del is correct.

You can get them.

It seems our local travel agents only have them when people come to change them back to sterling though.

As already stated change £10 or £20 at the airport or change it when you arrive at your hotel the taxi will wait (presuming you are staying at Hotel)

I thought it was illegal to take rupees out of India? Therefore how can travel agents over in the uk get hold of them?

If all else fails, just have to use the coach provided to get to my hotel.

Maybe it's illegal to take them undeclared or over a certain amount or maybe you can now get them because trade has opened up a bit and the Indian Government are trying to pull India into the "Developed World" arena, not sure really but you can definitely get hold of them.

I think del mentioned Thomas Cook and it was Thomas Cook in Purley, Surrey that told me they could get them but not large amounts.

http://www.nrilinks.com/india/Customs/visitor.htm#Currency%20Regulations

Says in the link that no Indian currency can be imported or exported unless it is in the form of travellers cheques.

Appreciate what the link says Fiona but it is a FACT that I have twice purchased rupees from travel agents.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will use this Elephant shop on the way to Little Baga. Would I be right in assuming all the taxi drivers will know where it is in Candolim ??

I seem to remember the topic of obtaining rupees outside of India appeared last year.

Some people said you can obtain £10 to £20 worth from airports such as Gatwick.

The rupee is supposedly a restricted currency and is supposed to be unavailable in the UK, although I have heard of people obtaining small quantities from time to time. If you are taking any rupees out of India which is illegal, it is best to hide them somewhere. When searched at the airport a policeman found 500 rupees in my shirt pocket which I had forgotten about, and promptly took half of it, handing me the rest with a smug grin.

If necessary we always change £10 at the airport which is more than enough for a taxi to the main resorts. In Candolim I always change money at the Alberquerque, as this is usaully a better rate than the Elephant shop, both of which generally open around 0900 hours. It is possible to change money ealrier than this in some of the small supermarkets.

IF you do manage to get rupees 'outside' of India as sure as eggs are eggs you will get a terrible rate.

If you must have rupees on arrival then I suggest yu use the one in the airport on arrival. You will get a lousy rate , at least 10 rupees less. Change no more than a fiver. Have a 20p coin ready for the luggage porters.

I got Rupees last year at 75 to the pound in UK.
In Candolim I think the rate was 84. I have no idea what the rate was in the airport.

Just a word of warning, the official airport taxi stand outside the Airport building is prepay, you pay the cashier, get a receipt and your driver will appear with his vehicle. Best to change a small amount of cash just to ensure that you can pay for your taxi. If you use a non official taxi tout, he'll stop at the cash machine for you on the way to the hotel but you'll also be charged over the odds in taxi fare.
