Hotel Alcudia Pins
Before I booked my holiday to Alcudia in Majorca, I did a thorough check of the hotel Alcudia pins, where I was going to stay. I was informed from different sources that the hotel was completely wheelchair friendly. So I set off to what I expected to be a "four star" relaxing two weeks resting in the sun, doing a little fishing. As I arrived at the hotel, at first glance it looked okay, and true enough there were ramps everywhere. We were shown to our room, and I was shocked to see that the ramp leading to my apartment block was very steep, but in true Yorkshire spirit I attempted it on my own just to make sure that I wasn't imagining it, and before my wife and daughter reached me, I set off up the ramp, suddenly my wheelchair tipped backwards and I fell out. I strained my left shoulder, and was helped back into my chair by my wife and daughter who had by this time arrived at my side. I had to rest for a while to recover from the shock, and I took a couple of pain killers, but luckily nothing was broken, but my shoulder was still painful. After a good few minutes struggle, my wife and daughter got me to what I was informed was an adapted wheelchair friendly room.
On entering the room I was clearly disappointed.
Although it had a few adaptations, the bathroom was far too small, as I could just scrape my wheelchair past the sink to get to the toilet.
The bedroom was so small that not only could I not get my wheelchair next to the bed, I couldn't get anywhere near the wardrobe to hang my clothes.
I was tired from the journey, so it was the sofa for me, and I decided to sort out the problems after I'd had a sleep.
Later I was helped down the ramp and decided with the help of my daughter, to explore the hotel before approaching the Airtours rep. I was surprised to find that although a couple of the ramps were a little steep, I could get around the hotel area and pool quite easily, but when it came to going for a meal, the ramp was again steep and slippery from sand that had blown in from the beach.
I approached the Airtours rep and gave him the facts, including that I had already fallen out of the wheelchair and hurt my shoulder. He was very helpful, and immediately came to look at the ramp to my room, and he even attempted to push me up the ramp without success. A few of the guests commented that the ramp was dangerous and required at least a grab rail on either side of the ramp for safety. The rep agreed and gave me a letter customer service form stating that he agreed that the ramp was not suitable for independent wheelchair users, and that assisted wheelchair users would require a strong carer to push them up the ramp, and he also wrote on the letter that I fallen out of the wheelchair whilst trying to ascend the ramp.
The rep stated that there was no other room available, and even if there was, each apartment block had a steep ramp to it. He asked if I would consider changing accommodation and I was informed that the only place nearby that would have rooms available was "Belle Vue Holiday Village." He stated that we would go down a grade to a three star accommodation, but at least the hotel was wheelchair friendly, and it wouldn't spoil our holiday. Well it was clear that the Alcudia pins was not going to be any good for me as a wheelchair user, so after a chat with my family, we agreed to the change of accommodation.
The Alcudia Pins hotel is only for assisted wheelchair users
After some running around, faxes, telephone calls, the rep gave us the news that a room had been made available to us at the Belle Vue holiday village, and after ordering a large taxi and a shake of the hand for his assistance in the matter, we set off to our new hotel.

Having read both of your reports on what was supposedly 'wheelchair friendly' hotels I would like to suggest that if you go back to Majorca you take a look at the Protur Alicia Hotel in Cala Bona.
On our first visit to the hotel I was using crutches following an op to repair a fractured ankle. This was a winter holiday so obviously the average age was somewhat higher than the summer months. There were many people people around with either sticks or wheelchairs. I think you do have to request a wheelchair friendly room.
The hotel was very well equipped for wheelchair use and no one seemed to have any problems. The best thing though is that the hotel is situated on a flat promenade which makes for great walks betwen Cala Bona and Cala Millor. Also, the view from the majority of the rooms is absolutely amazing.
Somewhere else to consider (although probably not in peak season) is the Son Matias Beach in Palma Nova - also very well equipped for wheelchair use.
Hope this might be of some help to you.
Pippa
Thank you Pippa, I have made a note of these places and will hopefully check them out "first hand" in the near future. I have actually travelled on the strip from Cala Millor to Cala Bona and found it very pleasant. Mike
I was wondering if anyone has stayed at the Alcudia Pins complex recently on a half board basis?
If so what is your personal view on the food? I stayed here years ago and I can remember the lovely spacious apartment we had and the beautiful location but I have read some off putting reveiws recently mostly to do with the apartments now being dirty.
I remember the food wasnt so good but that was years ago.
We would like to go back again as the price is so cheap.
Any feedback much appreciated.
Thank you!
Danny
We are off to Alcudia Pins this Friday for the 3rd year in a row - that should tell you we like it there! We were given half board free the first year we went due to a mix up with the booking, and found the food fine. There was a good selection (although you do have to be realistic with what you expect!) and there was always one dish cooked freshly each day on the griddle in front of you. At breakfast it was pancakes, which the kids loved and fried eggs. Last year we went self catering - purely due to cost, but after shopping for food was so expensive we wished we had gone half board, so this year it's half board again! The apartments again were fine - not the cleanest we've stayed in, but certainly nothing nothing more than dust under the bed to worry about! You have to remember it is a big complex full of families - it's not going to be spotless all the time, although we always found the pool outside areas very clean. With its location on the beach and it's atmosphere and facilities it is definately somewhere we enjoy going as a family!
Wow It still sounds great! as you say your 3rd time going back it can not be bad! I remember how good it was when we went and loved the location and atmosphere. The food sounds good aswell. We would never go self catering as you always have to budget your self and it works out to expensive as you found.
Please can I ask who have you booked through?
I have seen some great deals on Travel Republic but theres alot of mixed reveiws on them. I know Thomas Cook take bookings for them but theres a big difference in price.
I hope you have a fab time and I look forward to reading your reveiw.
Danny.
We have booked through Low Cost Beds this year, but booked through Travel Republic last year and had no problems whatsoever. Low cost beds were a little cheaper this year, but I don't think there was much in it. We've asked for our 'usual' room overlooking the pool, so fingers crossed it will be 3rd year lucky!
Will let you know how we get on!
We are travelling with two children (7 and for a short five day stay at the end of July. The girls have never been on a plane, let alone to the seaside so we want the trip to be memorable for them.
Has anyone got a plan of the Alcudia Pins layout?
I understand there are 9 Blocks and have read names such as Ibiza, Menorca and Mallorca but also B, C etc for the Blocks on internet reviews. I`d like to send a request to the hotel for a room location but do not know which Block is a good spot i.e. not by reception, no street view and away from noisier areas, possibly ground floor.
Is it possible to upgrade to a seaview and does the Hotel offer a late check-out?
Hope you can help
Thanks
Gaynor
We have just returned from Alcudia Pins. We have been there for the last three years. There are 5 blocks that overlook the pool (and have sea views) that are arranged in a U shape around the pool. The block at the back is over the reception, but I don't know what letter block it is - there are quite a few trees infront of those rooms as well as one of the block next to it. The other three blocks are D,E and F. We have always had a pool view room in Block D on the second floor (There are lifts as well as stairs). We had emailed the hotel beforehand to ask for a specific room in block D, but this time they put us in that block but in a room accross the corridor which didn't overlook the pool. When I asked (politely) if we could have a pool view room, they managed to change us over, but we did have to pay another 70 euros (which in our opinion was worth doing!). It would be worth sending the Pins a message through their website and asking for a poolview room and saying you are prepared to pay the extra (if you are). Friends of ours also phoned and spoke to the manager beforehand too and that worked! We asked if we could stay in our room for an extra hour and it was ok, but I think they have quite a quick turnaround for room changeovers. There is a locker room that you can put your cases in and showers etc otherwise.
I hope you enjoy yourselves there, and manage to get a good room as it makes all the difference! If you need any more info just ask!
Shezzy,
Hi.
