Well it's only a week away 'till we have a relaxed break, staying in Gran Alacant, and we are looking to take in trips to Santa Pola and Alicante city. I have been browsing the sites that are on offer, showing what's what etc. but any thoughts on both places as to avoid or MUST see and do's.
We both like trips round markets, especially the food markets to see how the locals get on with life.
Food wise, well we will always try what's on offer so any cheap places that are recommended would be great help.
We ain't driving, so it's walking, local bus and the 'noddy' train - will do us fine.
Cheers folks.
Have sent you a PM.
Cheers !!
Better layed out than SF, easier to get about with public transport and walking, and much more choice with bars and restaurants, big thanks to all at Bar Sioux, a very friendly place.
We visited Santa Pola and Alicante and were very impressed with both places, you can keep your Benidorm, these 2 are just amazing places to explore (must start to understand the Spanish language more !!)
We will have to return one day, as there is far more to see, as a week wasn't enough ! As for the weather - a bit of a freak for October people were saying, with temperatures up to the 90's most days.
Thanks for the help with my previous questions,
Hasta luego.
Glad you had a good time. Gran Alacant is a great place and easy to get into Alicante which is a fantastic city and the nightlife in the old town (El Barrio) is great, as relaxed or as fast paced as you want, it just starts later then Benidorm. Gran Alacant has some very good restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. No hotels but plenty of self catering accommodation close to a superb beach (Carabassi).
I think I may have mentioned the Urbs at San Fulgencio being a concrete jungle, and I suppose Gran Alacant is in the same bracket, but with easier public transport to get out and about it's in a great position to move around.
Price wise with beers for example in GA, I don't think were too bad with English owned places averaging 2 a pint and in most spanish bars being the same.
Restaurants in GA were very mixed, having eaten Spanish,Italian,Chinese and Indian, all reasonable and no complaints about quality, Patagonia steak house came out tops - seems to be a big chain of these about and always popular.
Visited the town of El Altet for a mooch about and prices there were lower being mainly spanish (love the tapas).
Bus prices very good 1.30 / 1.40 either way
Alicante - we need to go back to go at night time, I can just imagine the streets and small squares lit up with everyone just enjoying the amazing food and bars - bliss !!
Only sad thing to see anyway you look is the amount of graffiti - needs sorting..
Hey, I am going there as well. End of July have booked holidays with Directline-holidays.co.uk can you please recommend some places when you get back.
He's back Georgia judging by the date of his post. However, hopefully someone will be along to help you shortly
Missed your post Georgia, where you staying ?
The castle at Alicante, you go in a tunnel off the sea front and then go up in a free lift, the views are great. Then walk down through the old town. We also enjoyed the train to several of the local seaside places,it cost very little two years ago.
