Will be staying at the Alka apartments in Gumbet in June this year.
This is our first trip to Turkey and would appreciate it if a few of our questions can be answered.
Myself, my wife, daughter and her friend (both 16) are going and we need to know how much her friend will need for food and drink etc. We are self catering so will have some meals and snacks in our apartment, but most evening meals will be taken at bars or restaurants.
Really just after prices of things like pizza, burgers, kebabs, beer, soft drinks etc.
Also can anyone recommend local food and drink?
Read in the forum that it is best to take sterling and change to Turkish Lira, is that still the case?
Thanks in advance and any other info on anything Turkish would be greatly appreciated.
Dave.
Anyone??
The local beer is Efes, which I think is good, I don't really drink spirits and Turkish wine is ok but not brilliant and quite expensive. Raki is the local Turkish speciality, drunk with water, a bit like ouzo or pernod - very potent so don't drink too much.
Turkish food is great, if you want to try some really good fTurkish food I would recommend Saray Zetas, just ask and someone will direct you.
I would take some Lira to start with and then either change sterling there or get money from the ATMs.
If you want to know anything else just ask, I lived in Gumbet for a few years so I may be able to help.

We've just come back from Gumbet and the place was just opening up. Beer (Efes) was 5YTL for a large one but there's usually offers around the bars. Don't know about the kebabs cos we didn't have on this time. As a rough guide, steak meals (large platefuls) were about 19YTL. We were getting around 2.5YTL to the pound. Prices don't seem to have risen from last year. We'be got a place in Gumbet so if you want to know any more, just ask.
As said in original post, this will be our first trip to Turkey so do not know what to really expect.
Been to Bulgaria and Cyprus in the last three or four years (as well as the usual Ibiza and Spain) and enjoyed both.
What is the legal drinking age in Turkey. I ask this because it will be my daughters 16th birthday while we are out there and she was hoping to celebrate (not excessively!!!) by having a drink or two. Would that be a problem?
Would you recommend any trips from Gumbet? Not hiring a car so would have to be organised or public transport. What is the public transport like?
Cheers
Dave.
Gumusluk and Rabbit island by Dolmus, very interesting trip. Go to Bodrum bus station via Dolmus change bus to Gumusluk plenty of great Fresh Fish restaurants there and walk across the shallow waters to Rabbit Island. by going on public transport its very cheap, about 2 lira to Bodrum and 5 lira to Gumusluk.
Turgetreis Market, usually free on a Saturday or at the most £3 Each, usually tie this trip in with a Turkish Bath at an original Haman, its great if there are a few of you as the guys usually humiliate one of your group.
Bodrum itself is a good day out and a visit to the castle is a must.
A day trip to Kos via the ferry is a nice day also AT £15 a head, buy cigs legally to bring back to England, spirits at £6 a bottle of Vod.
Bitez beach is also nice and just round the corner from Gumbet.
A game of snooker in the Sami Beach Hotel is good when its too hot or my personal fave just chillin with a cold beer on the beach.
Hope you have a great time
Al
The public transport is very good, they run minibusses called dolmus, which run every 5 minutes or so into Bodrum. From there you can get dolmus all over the peninsular, it is a great way to travel.
