We went to the Holiday village last November and tried to walk to the Conrad but in the end it was too far so got a taxi. There are a few private apartments that have been built nearby but you have to go to Naama bay with is about half an hours ride away or Nabq bay which is only 10 minutes taxi ride away for shops and restaurants.
Look on Google earth as the image for the area,Ras Nostrani, is very clear and will give you a good idea of the area around the hotel.
As Jay said it is quite isolated with a few shops in the hotel itself and around 20 shops in "Baron Boulevard"
There are a few more details in my review.Taxi into Naama costs around 7 pounds each way. Entertainment is centred around the main pool in the day and the Panorama bar at night. Wonderful snorkelling of the jetty and plenty of fish to see in the shallow water. For a relaxed beach type holiday you won't go wrong
Any specific questions ask away

While the Conrad is a fabulous hotel the children might get bored. If the price is the same I would book the HV as it caters much more for families.
There is a section of the pool for kids and also the beach is lovely. There was also your kiddies disco at night. The children who were there seemed happy enough and the staff were very good with them.
Hope this is of some help to you.
