We found the east coast to be very humid in May far more so than the same hotel Nov/Dec.
Mossies, again difficult to say, some hotels spray well and some don't, individual hotel reviews usually say if there is a problem. The only time I have been badly bitten was in a hotel with a stagnant pond next door. Applying a good repellent as soon as the sun goes down seems to work as well as keeping doors shut in the evening. We tend to take a room plug in or spray, also used a sonic device attached to my bag on the last few trips and had a lot fewer bites. They usually like the taste of me too.
My personal preference is for Punta Cana but I have also visited the North and South of the island and had a great time.
My experience of people who don't like the DR are of those not prepared for the poverty there, it is a third world country, things are improving, mainly because of tourism but there its still to be seen outside of the resorts. Once in the hotel you wouldn't know, most are gorgeous, with extensive grounds and beautiful gardens. With a few exceptions I would go for at least a 4* hotel. Most are very isolated so if you want to get out and about choose carefully, Sosua and Puerto Plata are fair sized towns and fun to explore. You can hire a taxi for the day or a period of time for a fixed price agreed in advance, ask at reception for recommendations, it usually works out cheaper than the TO's excursions if there are more than two of you.
If you like tea, take some English tea bags as theirs taste like pond water and we usually take a travel kettle as its a long way to walk from your room to get a cuppa, although some hotels now provide facilities.
I could go on but you' ll probably fall asleep
Anything specific, just ask and I'll do my best.
Have a good time.
It does depend on where in the DR you are going. For an explanation of the weather the following link is helpful even if it is a little drawn out: We found the east coast to be very humid in May far more so than the same hotel Nov/Dec.
