Has anyone done the' Big cruise' - we're both retiring soon and would love to visit Australia but don't fancy the long flights. We're willing to take about 6 weeks doing this and wondered if there is a fly/cruise alternative - we don't want to be constantly packing and unpacking and would like to visit various places in Australia as this will be a one off. Also we don't want to spend our entire savings and although we want comfort we are not into "posh dining". Am I asking for the impossible?? Really grateful for any ideas, by the way we have never cruised before.

one option could be to use a relocation cruise to break up teh flight time,
For example fly to west coast USA and take a cruise to Aus from there perhaps stoping Hawaii or french poly, NZ.
Another is fly to the far east and cruise down from there
All these options will require a lot of ship time so I would do a trial cruise before a big one like this.
You might find a cruise that is part of a round the world that meets part of the goal. something like this one on the new Cunard Queen Victoria(sold out I think)

A you will see to travel the distance to reduce flying requires a lot of sea days.
Aus only cruises will still require the long flight but something like this might do
