What a fantastic time we had too!
There were 4 of us in our party to Sunny Beach, all adults, and staying at the Sunny Day hotel. We left Manchester on 7/9/09 and had a slight delay when leaving Manchester of 3 hours, not too bad, got a £4 voucher each and just had a couple of drinks, all went by very quickly really. We eventually borded the plane and set off on our 3 hour 20 minute journey with no hiccups. We landed in Bourgas airport at around 9am with a cold, cloudy and rainy day greeting us - I must point out at this point I couldnt have been any more pessimistic!
We were transferred to our hotel, Sunny Day, very quickly and smoothly and were met at the reception by a very nice receptionist, we were told that due to the storms that Sunny Beach had been experiencing that we would have to switch rooms that had originally been allocated to us. We were transferred from 2 rooms, to 1 apartment on the ground floor. We were far from happy with this. Albeit the apartment was lovely, however being 2 couple we really wanted seperate rooms and definitely didnt want a ground floor room, especially with the cats walking round. We didnt say anything at this point due to the fact we were all knackered with the delay and just wanted to get in, and lie down. We were told our rep would be giving a welcome speech at 16:00 so we waited til then to have a word. After speaking to the rep she managed to sort new room for us by the Thursday which meant 2 days in the apartment which wasnt too bad.
After all that we decided to investigate our surroundings, initially we came out of sunny day and walked right...this wasnt the best idea! After walking for 20 minutes down some of the crappest pavement and seeing only hotels and bushes we decided to turn back, halfway back we came accross some English people, asked them where the beach was and was told to go left at sunnyday and past the supermarket. We walked back, past the supermarket and finally found a whole host of bars, restaurants, shops and of course the beach. After finally finding these things the holiday took a complete u-turn an everything seemedto go a lot smoother!
We changed rooms a few days later and were a lot happier at this point. The rooms were basic but clean, with 2 single beds pushed together, large dressing table & mirror, a sofa bed and a balcony overlooking the pool. We were more than happy with the rooms, especially as the shower was better than that I have at home, I've never seen water pressure like it! After this point the weather was very good, a few days of overcast and a few days of sunshine. However in the second week it was nothing but sunshine, I would guess at around...85 degrees-ish.
Theres plenty to do at sunny beach for adults, but it seemed limited if you had kids. We ventured out every night to the host of restaurants, really loving Emona, and a few others which names escape me. In regards to food, I've never tasted better in some places. If you like your meat then you're sure to love Bulgaria, from the steak sandwich to the gorgeous Kavarma...delicious. Bulgaria in general was more expensive than I was lead to believe, but still very cheap. On average a meal for 4 with 4 large beers, 4 starters and 4 main courses would cost circa...70 lev, which equates to around £35.00. Most bars sold large beers for around 2.50 lev (£1.25ish) and cocktails for 8 lev (£4.00) in a 2-4-1 offer. Again not as cheap as I was led to believe but nothing to complain about.
We took regular trips to the beautiful town of Nessebar, both during the day and night, and what a place it is, well worth the trip (1 lev each on the bus). Very picturesque, with some restaurants with a sea view, or more in the centre with views of the people, building and lovely cobbled streets.
Coming home there was a massive 6 hour delay which we learnt Thomas cook new about the day before but still picked us up and left everyone waiting in a poor airport. The flight home was great and landed back in rainy manchester after 3 hours 15 minutes.
If you're after a beautiful place, with bars and restuarants galore, cheap and nice people that Sunny Beach is your place.
What a great review.
Unfortunately there has been a few not so good reports about Bulgaria so its good to read your very positive review. This will be a great help to people who havent visited before and who have booked for 2010.
You have said that you found Bulgaria to be more expensive than you were led to believe but honestly the prices there are SO cheap compared to other popular holiday destinations. We have visited the Algarve and Ibiza this year and have to say that the prices in Ibiza in particular were pretty steep! I am sure Bulgaria will continue to be excellent value for the next few years at least.
Forgot to mention an unforgettable night at Khans tent, absolutely fantastic, something I'll remember for a long time. 80 Lev pp including, 4 course meal, bottle of wine each (with fanta if you dont drink, or can be swapped for large beer), coach there and back and some of the best entertainment ive seen. Amazing night. I would post pictures but it says I dont have enough posts.
Sorry to hear about your flight delays, especially in Bourgas at the end of your holiday. It is not the ideal airport to spend time. I can remember us having a 9hour delay, coming home about 4years ago but we were lucky, we checked our luggage in and went back to the resort with our Bulgarian friend and had a fantastic evening with them before they took us back to the airport for the flight home!"
There are many places in Sunny Beach where you can eat and drink at more than half the prices you quoted. We always use restaurants used by the locals.
I think a lot of people on their first trip to Sunny Beach can spend half their time trying to find the their way round.
it can be difficult if you are a bit away from the centre on your first visit.
After the first time, its easy.
Can i just give St Vlas another plug. It might not have the same status or history as Nessebar, but for 1 lev on the bus, its worth a look, even if just for lunch.
2010 cant come soon enough, just hope the flight only rip off prices come down a bit.
We were delayed on that flight back as well. Something fishy about it, especially the large plane with double aisles and lots of empty seats. And who managed to make all those free sandwiches so quickly? It isn't a great airport to spend when there is a delay though, complete lack of seats.
