I'm not a fan of Blackpool but when you look at British beaches you have to bear in mind that we have tides and Spain (at least in the Med) doesn't. If Blackpool council used a fleet of tractors to shift the rubbish, the next tide would dump a hundred tons more of it back on the beach. That's not the council's fault, it's ours for dumping the stuff in the first place. A lot of what people pull faces at is just seaweed in any case!
I've always found Benidorm to be very clean apart from when walking down certain streets in the early hours, by which time the bins have been put out for collection. Obviously in that heat they do tend to whiff a bit. The fact is that they have to be collected at some time and if I'm still up and about then, I can't moan about bins being out for a 3am collection. It's better than having them left out during the day. One thing that has always amazed me about Benidorm is how they manage to actually deliver services we would regard as normal (water, electricity, shop deliveries etc etc) in such a manic place. I mean how DO you get water to go up to the thirtieth floor of a building?
There was a lot of pressure washing in the streets going on ( we were dropped off at hotel at 3.30 am and went round a lot of the resort!) and I thought they tried very hard to keep the area clean.
I couldn't fault the cleanliness. And no cockroaches, unlike Tenerife, which I love!

Julie and I were in Beni for a week in March, another two weeks in June. We have already booked another six days in Novemeber, and another week next March. We are tolerant people, go with the flow, and don't expect miracles, but if we felt somewhere was not clean and hygenic enough, we wouldn't go there again. One of the things I remember about Beni is that you never go anywhere without seeing someone using a mop and bucket somewhere. In the hotels you will still see cleaners working in the late afternoon/early evening. I can honestly say, that in the daytime, I have never seen vomit stains, doggy buisness or yellowish marks in corners.
My only criticism of Benidorm (in infrastructure terms) is that its' drainage and sewer system simply cannot stand up to sustained periods of rain, which although rare are becoming more frequent.
Some people dislike Benidorm before they even arrive and are too narrow minded to change their opinion even if it doesn't turn out to be as bad as they anticipated/told by others.
People compare it to Blackpool but I can't honestly see the comparision, Blackpool to me is the biggest -hole on earth with people staggering round drunk at lunch time then wanting to fight as night falls. I've never had a single problem in Bendiorm, I find the atmosphere to be friendly and compared to other Spanish/European resorts and their is a good mix of ages throughout the bars which adds to the atmosphere.
If I'm honest I was a sceptic before I went the first time (as I loved Tenerife), probably fitted into the stereotype I've mentioned above but for me there is no place in Spain like Benidorm.
Apologies for the essay
HAY same as me allways said i would never go to benni and have been all over spain and the canneries. and if it was not for a bad holiday in menorca in may i prob would never have whent in august/ so thanks menorca i have got to say what a fantastic resort benni is the whole family loved it out until 2.00am in the morn and never seen any bother or nothing food, drink and shoes for the wife were realy cheap had so much fun we are going back next july
We've lived in Benidorm for four and a half years and it is kept as clean as possible but it must be a difficult job with so many tourists dropping litter, throwing up etc we've also found it's one of the safest places to live x
It comes under the boundary of Torremolinos, but is approx as far from Torremolinos ...as the far end of the Levante beach is to the other end of the old town.( in distance.)
Following on from my previous post, I deliberately made a point of comparing the resorts.
I love this area, I love Andalucia and would up sticks and move here tomorrow if David would only come with me....but....
It is not as clean as Benidorm and that is a fact without doubt, even taking into consideration that the streets are dirty because they have had no rain and it is coming to the end of the season.
We walked to Torremolinos the other day and to avoid a hill, we gradually climbed through the back streets.....and I've never seen as much dog in all my life, it stunk.
I did see a council worker sweeping up the litter, but he swept around the dog poo, I was gobsmacked, it was as though it wasnt his job, so the stopped on the pavement.
We got to the top road which is the main coastal road and there was loads of dog on the main pavement.
Another day (Friday) we went up to Arroyo de Miel and sat on a small wall looking at the cable car whilst I decided if I had the guts to go on it (which I chickened out BTW) and David said..... hell, I'll have to move, it stinks of dog pee and :swear.
Don't anybody tell me Benidorm is dirty.
When you actually start and look to compare, then Benidorm deserves a medal for the effort thats put into keeping the place clean.
Finally, the bloody dustmen empty the bins at 5pm, just as I'm having an afternoon siesta....plonkers
Besos x
