I know that this virus has taken a year or so to move from Asia towards the West but it does seem to have consolidated in mid rural Turkey with a prospect of it spreading well into Europe.
Initially, so I understand, you had to be in constant and close contact with birds in order to pick up the virus, in particular poultry, but if it is to mutate it is likely that its travel West will be via man, all this made worse at this time of year as many birds (carriers) begin their migration West!
What effect may this have on holidays, I am aware that some people who normally opt for Turkey are having a change of mind, although to be fair I understand that bookings are only marginally down on other years!
There is no doubt that if it travels West, Crete and other Greek Islands (and the mainland) will see a fall in visitors. We too in the UK will be affected. I have seen others ask on other SITES if the Greek Authorities are doing anything, it seems that even the provision of information is not taking place!
A TV Programme last night suggested its a case of when and not if, we in the UK are hit by it, probably after the rest of Europe! The TV Programme also hinted that 1 in 5 people may catch the virus with 1 in 50 actually being killed?
Anyone else concerned about the effect it will have on holidays?
The intention was not meant to scare monger, I am just not sure that this threat is being taken as seriously as it might!
Your thread was taken Very seriously and until there is any confirmed cases of endemic bird flue in the Greek republic i stand by my original decision........... a bird flue topic is current in the Turkey forum
