Tui Travel, has reduced capacity in the U.K. business by 11 percent for the winter season.
TUI Travel's winter-season revenue has risen 8 percent in central Europe, matching growth in the western part of the region.
Vacation sales for next summer have climbed 11 percent both in the U.K. and in Nordic nations, the statement shows. Revenue for that season has gained 8 percent in central Europe and 23 percent in western Europe, with activity holiday sales up 13 percent. The figures cover a period from Oct. 1 to Dec. 2.
While Thomas Cook, plans to reserve fewer hotel rooms and airline seats in advance, may expand through more acquisitions, according to Chief Executive Officer Manny Fontenla-Novoa.

A very simple analogy - if you are a family of four do you cater for eight?
If you were to look at their business plan and sales forecast for 2008 then they may still finish up with unsold holidays.
There is a financial squeeze and holidays will be one of the casualties.

With that in mind, their tactics of inflating prices & restricting supply is not necessarily good business practice with the current/forward soft market conditions as you point out.
