I haven't been. A friend was supposed to go this Christmas she asked me to go with her, but I declined. She finally decided not to go, she said she had really bad feelings about going as a 'rich westerner ' to a country whose people were still suffering from the results of the cyclone, many people starving, the government having done very little to help it's people. She felt that most of the money she would spend would not benefit the people but just a rich few i.e. the Burmese Junta and some foreign hotel chains.
Although I love the countries of South East Asia and their people I decided a long time ago I wouldn't visit Burma during it's present political climate.
I don't want to hijack Shirley's thread but would be interested in other peoples views.

Have to say that I personally would avoid it just now.
Hi Shirly,
The country looks fascinating, but Janet and I have decided not to go there whilst the present regime is in power.
There is an argument that any income to the country is a bonus.
We have a feeling, however, that any income would be directed to the 'wrong' destination.
We would feel uncomfortable, going there on that basis.

Had a friend who went a few years ago- he loved it, but I have to agree that I would avoid it given the regime there currently
