Hi Dave - if you do it yourself it could work out cheaper. Flights to Luxor at the week end are via Cairo so you could arrange your flights so you could spend the day in Cairo before flying onto to Luxor to spend the night and whole day.

There are some really good cheap hotels in Luxor. I am flying from Sharm to Luxor 21st June and back again 26th. New Pola hotel had room rates for just £11 for 2 adults bed and breakfast. Flights have gone up and I paid £100 each return.

When we went to Cairo we booked a guide ourselves which was really cheap and included new air con mini bus and driver and think we paid something like £10 each - then entry to museum and pyramids - was 50le each and guide got student rates for the kids - think these have increased slightly since.

If you go to Cairo with a tour via coach the price now is about £45 each including entry and lunch - flight for day trip via tours is about £150 each. Coach journey is very long and my mum and friends done this last month ( I stayed behind as have done it before ) via coach and they hated it. Very long and because they were the last ones getting on the coach the had the back seats that didnt recline and had the heat off of the engine.

Personally if it was me and I had choice of the 2 Luxor would win hands down.

I have been to both Cairo and Luxor, both fab places to visit. If I had to chose I would probably pick Luxor as there are more sites to be seen there. Have a good time whichever you pick
