The full name of the company is HiperRentaCar. Car hire booking agent economycarhire.com use them for any bookings they take for Menorca but they do have their own website as well.

We always hire a car from the airport as it's so much cheaper than getting taxis then hiring a car at your resort.
We have used Car-Jet and Poppy Cars.
Car-Jet was cheaper than Poppy Cars and it is based at the airport but you do need your credit card as they take out the price of a full tank of petrol from your account, you then take it back empty - a bit difficult as you don't want to run out of petrol on the way back for your return flight. We would use them again though.
Poppy cars, we also found good and would use them again. They don't have an office at the airport though so make sure you have their phone number at hand incase you need to phone them. Our flight was 10 mins early once and when they weren't there we started to panic.
There are only two main roads going out from Mahon, the rest of the roads just branch off, the roads are very good.

Hi All

Been looking at a few quotes for car hire for our hol in Cala'n Bosch in August and am tempted to book this one: It's with http://www.Carjet.com and £131 for 7 days for a 5 door Clio (or similar) with pick up from resort. Child seats are 2euros a day extra, but as far as I can see everything else is inclusive, although you do have to pay for a full tank of petrol on pick up. Anyone have any experience with this company and know if it's reliable, also is this a good price? I'm a bit reluctant to leave sorting it until we get there as it's peak season and don't want to risk not being able to get what we want. Should I go ahead and book do you think?

Thanks, Nic

That seems a good price to me, we take our own booster seat as it is very light, also would you not consider picking the car up at the airport ?

Hi Paul, thanks for your reply. I've thought about getting a car from the airport but the thing that's putting me off is the fact that neither myself or my husband have driven abroad before. Plus I think because we'd need room for all our cases and flight bags (2 ad and 2 ch) that we'd probably need a bigger car. We are also going for 2 weeks so would need to book for 14 days, all this added up it will end up costing a lot more I think. Although the thought of not having to hang around waiting for the coach to set off and then avoiding the numerous drop offs with 2 young kids is very appealing. I might have another browse but I think we'll probably have at least 3 cases plus some hand baggage, could we squeeze all that into a Clio sized car? Another thought is we are due to arrive around 6.30 pm, will it be getting dark by then in August, I'm not very good at map reading at the best of times let alone in the dark!

Last summer was the 1st time that i had driven abroad and after 10 mins i was fine, the roads are great and as someone has said on here before the island has one main road going right down the middle and lots of roads going to the coast ( a bit like a fish ) the good thing is if you get lost you can only go as far as the coast then you need to go back to the main road as there is no coast road as such.
I took me just over 1 hour to drive the lenth of the island.
What we are doing this year is geting the transfer when we arrive then on day 3 i will jump the bus to the airport and pick the car up, we will have booked the car untill the last day of our holidays.............then my wife and the young lad will get the transfer back and i will drive back with the suitcases drop the car off and check in...................hence we only have the car for 11 days and we have no need to upgrade the car size.
We have booked the car tru Avis on the airmiles . it took 1600 miles for the car hire.
Quick tip if you get a lloyds visa credit they credit you with 1500 miles the first time you use it, so that could be well worth looking at.........Good luck.

Thanks for that tip about the airmiles Paul, I'll definately look into that. Have been looking at quotes for a bigger car for the full fortnight and it will cost loads more as thought. About £400 for Focus size and £600 ish for Megane, so will definately stick with my original plan to have the 7 days from about day 3 of the holiday, might think about extending that by a couple of days depending on cost.
Thanks for your help, Nic

As said above driving is not a problem on Menorca. I took a few wrong turns when I was there on my own and it was easy to turn as the traffic is light. I have only hired cars at the resort off peak time, like May and September. I have heard from others that Poppy Cars is really good.

Thanks Blanck. Yes I've seen really good reports about Poppy Cars but have got a quote and they are quite a lot more plus you have to contact them to see if they'll deliver to resort and it looks as though they charge for this. I'll have another look though and weigh up whether I think it's worth paying the difference.

Car hire prices have gone up more than normal in the Balearics since last year mainly due to the current poor exchange rate of the £GBP against the grotty Euro. I only paid £195 for 2 weeks hire of a Ford Fusion in Mallorca last August with recordrentacar.com (Carjet were a similar price) and £85 for a week's hire of a 5-dr Renault Clio equivalent economy class car in Menorca last October with doyouspain.com. Car hire in Menorca is normally a bit more expensive than in Mallorca anyway but if you don't have to pay up front now and can pay at the time of hire, hopefully the exchange rate will have improved by then.

Just to allay any concerns about Carjet, I have booked my car hire in Spain with them 4 times in the last 6 years and had no problems at all. They are only booking agents for the car hire company who actually supply the car though.

Thanks for that Robbo. I've never hired a car before and thought that the price quoted of £131 for the Clio sounded quite reasonable. Have seen very mixed reviews about car jet but as you say they are only the agent and if I book direct with the companies in Cala'n Bosch the quotes seem dearer. Think I might go for it.

Hi All

I'm really annoyed with myself...I didn't end up booking the car hire after my last post...thought I'd leave it a while. Had a look at Carjet again at the weekend and the cost has jumped from £131 to £168 for the Clio for 7 days, plus there's the cost of the child seats which is 2.50 euros per day x2 for 7 days. Was wondering if anyone has any other recommendations for car hire that can be collected from resort (Cala'n Bosch) or should I just go ahead and book incase it gets any more expensive?

Thanks for any replies...again, Nic.

hi, we are going to cala galdana in june with two infants. We don't want to hire a car for the whole 10 days but sounds as though cheapest to hire a car from airport rather than taxi. Can anyone please tell me of a reliable, reasonably priced hire company that would do one way from airport to the resort, also would prefer one with an office/desk at the airport so that we don't have to be shuttled to another office as we are arriving about 19.00hrs

many thanks.

Hi - we also went to Cala Galdana last June, and we hired a car from the airport with Poppy cars - they are not based at the airport but were very good. We have also hired cars in the past with, carjet.com who are based at the airport, but I don't know if they have one way hire. (you do need to take your credit card for carjet). I'm not sure, but think that if you don't have the same drop off and pick up point, then there is an extra cost, so it may even work out more expensive than a taxi? Hope this helps - vick :)

Thank you Vick for your reply. It seems that Poppy cars won't do one ways. I got a quote from menorca car rental but they do charge extra for one ways so we are now rethinking it all. A prebooked taxi is also expensive. Any suggestions welcome - looks like the best value for money is a 10 day hire although really didn't want to be tied down to a car for the whole period and we would need to hire a larger car I think because of our double buggy.

Can't wait to visit the island.

Hi again - yes it takes some sorting out doesn't it, trying to find the best way. You should be able to hire a car for just 3 days once you are at Cala Galdana, so it might be worth seeing if it is cheaper to get return taxis and hire the car for 3 days or just hire from the airport. In June you wont have any trouble getting a taxi outside the airport, I wouldn't think there is any need to pre-book. We have been going for a number of years now and only had taxis once as it worked out so much more expensive. We did use the car every day last year, even on the days that we stayed at the resort. We were at the top of a hill near Hotel Annabel, so it was handy to take all the kit down to the beach, dingy, inflatables, food, drinks, kids, kitchen sink! If you get the chance it's a good day out at Son Bou, the children loved the maze, but I can't remember how old your children are? There are 2 lovely pools there too at San Jamie, free to use - one for small children and one for older and they have an entertainer, tea shirt painting etc. Going back to Cala Galdana, it's a nice walk to the square in the evening where they have entertainment on, free, and it's safe for children too. Let me know if I can be of any more help - Vick

Hi Vick

Still can't make up our minds. Had considered getting taxi outside airport but they don't provide child car seats so feel a bit anxious about that. Our girls will be nearly 2 years of age. Perhaps hire for full period might be best - you made me think that perhaps it might be useful as we are staying in the hillside (Gama appts) so could be good for trips to the beach. Is there good, free parking near the beach? When you used carjet did they have someone at the airport, and is the car parked there. Also, on return, do they check the car or do you just leave car parked? Thanks for tip about Son Bou - sounds great. Are you going again this year?

Thanks for your help.

Hi again -
I'm sure that hiring a car from the airport is probably the best option - it's much better to just throw everything you need for the beach into the car when you have all the children's things, not to mention drinks etc. Also good for going out now and again - the maze at Son Bou is more suitable for older children, but still worth a visit as they have the pool for small children, and also a small fun fair near the beach and a bouncy castle. Having a car saves us so much money on food too as we go into one of the large Hyper market shops in Mahon and load up for the week. There is also a large Spar supermarket not far from Mahon. The shops aren't too bad in Cala Galdana, but for a bulk shop you can't beat the big Hypermarkets.
There is a train that goes round Cala Galdana, and it will probably pass your hotel, but be warned, it's very expensive. I can't remember exactly how much but we did all jump on it one evening to go back up the hill and my husband almost fainted at the cost. There is good free parking right near the beach, you do have to cross a road near ‘The Tap' but it's not a problem, it has a pedestrian crossing - two minuets walking from the car park to the beach, if that.
We are going to Menorca in June, to Son Bou for the first week with my daughter & grandsons, then the second week we are staying near Fornells on the other side, a quieter place as the children are going home after the first week. We are hiring a car from carjet. I can't remember if they are agents for other car hire firms or not. I know one year we couldn't find their desk and when we produced our voucher we were shown another car hire firm based at the airport - we had no trouble at all though. This year when I booked I was told that someone would be waiting at the entrance for us. Keep your voucher handy with the contact phone number on, although we have never had any problems. All cars are parked over the road from the airport on one ground level, a lower level than the airport, so as you cross the road you can see the car park below and it's easy to see the different zones (there is an open glass lift that takes you down to the car park) - it's not very big so you wont be walking far - the zones are marked like ‘Carjet 1-2-3' with say 10 cars there, so everything is easy to find. If someone meets you, then they will probably take you over to the car. Returning you just leave the car in the right zone and come back up the lift to the airport entrance, you don't have them checked. We handed our keys at one of the desks inside the airport but I think different hire firms have different ways of doing things. Most ask you to pay for a full tank of petrol, on your credit card, when you pick the car up, as the car is full, you take it back as empty as you can. Hope this helps - Vick :)
