I want to hire a car in Mallorca in August and am prepared to pay a surcharge to ensure that I am covered for everything and not liable for an excess.
The Europcar conditions are gobbledigook in this respect, could anyone please clarify the situation.
I hired a car in Ibiza last year from Europcar, I thought I was covered for the payment of an excess then but they did keep a docket with my credit card on until I brought the car back, whereupon they destroyed it.

Car hire companies will keep an imprint of your credit card - in case you bring the car back damaged or don't bring it back at all! they then have something to charge you with.
We always use and can highly recommend Economy Car Hire or Travel Autos when we hire a car in Portugal. They are sister companies based in the UK. Their prices are competitive and are truly all inclusive, and there is no excess to pay in the event of an accident, damage or theft. The cars have always been excellent, and they cover a second driver free (in Portugal anyway). You can easily get quotes on the internet, and they are friendly and efficient to deal with on the phone if you need to confirm or query anything. They do take an imprint of your credit card, but we have always been given it back on returning the car (even when it was damaged - not when we were in it, I hasten to add in case hubbie reads this!!!).
