Hello all
we are going to platanias in two weeks, with First Choice,
some people say to hire a car from First Choice and some say from locals
whic is best?
Thanks
Steve
Steve, you will find plenty of local car hire companies in the area. No need to commit to FC, the locals are much cheaper. If you wish to book prior to departure, look up Economy Car Rentals on the 'net. They do a good all-in deal. I have always had excellent service at a very reasonable price from them.
We have always used the local car hires. Always better deals and have had good fairly new cars - some hire firms even do money exchange. 4 x 4 jeeps are great fun but not much shelter from the sun. Check the car round first before driving off in it and tell them of any damage that you notice before hand otherwise they can say that you have done it and charge you. It is always good to use local businesses if you can. Things are not soo good at the moment financially for local businesses according to a friend who lives in Platanaias.
Does anyone have any experience of car hire in Stalis, for 30 July to 6 August ? I've got a quote from Europcar for £120 for the week (Hyundai Atoz, seems small car similar say to a Ford Fiesta / Vauxhall Corsa that sort of thing, with AC) but was wondering if it might be better to walk in ?
Thanks, Paul.
walk in!! - had a Punto 2 weks for £80 and a full tank to boot!
We are going to Ag Nik in September and was planning on hiring a car for a few days to explore the island. I have heard some bad reports about cars not maintained very well in Greece - is this true ?! Does anyone have any advice on best car hire or should we stay clear !
Thanks
same thing aplies for car hire companies in crete. some do their service properly and some dont. thats all i can say.
my advice as in the tourism bussiness is to check out the insurance and when they say full do they mean full or after some money (like 300 Euro) paid for the first expenses from you it is full.
another thing to know. tyres and the under of the car in most companies are not covered. so if you get a car stick to main roads and dont take it off the road to see how good it can be in rocky ground!!!

good newish cars with no added extras and underside of the car is insured despite the lies that avis etc will tell you.
I've just booked using the link (thanks Geoggy) A 5 door Citreon is £113 for a week. Our transfers were working in at £100. Good deal I would say.
Does anyone have any preffered car hire dealers in Hersonisoss or the surrounding area? We're looking to stay in Koutouloufari, and would like a runaround for a few days. I dont fancy getting one direct from the airport, I'll be to knacked to do left hand drive late at night
Or why not look up the major companies on the net before you go? Holiday Autos seem to have reasonable prices, and petrol is cheaper in Crete than in France (and therefore also cheaper than in the UK).
we always stay in koutouloufari but we always hire a car from the airport. the drive is very easy.
we always use http://www.athenscars-crete.gr/
good cars, very cheap with no additional insurance to pay on pick up.
if you dont fancy it from the airport (although i would recommend it mate - just to nip up and down the hill from koutouloufari) they have an office in Hersonnisos.
Babis is a top bloke - fill in an online quote and he'll give you a call.
Hope that helps
G
Cheers for that!! I'll probably stop by theioffice in Hersonnisos the day after we get there - the flight doesnt arrive till late, I dont fancy driving on the wrong side of the road whilst tired, and unsure of where I'm going. I've been to Herssonisoss before, but it was 6 years ago...........
As a matter of interest, where do you stay in Koutouloufari??

best complex in the village bar none.
email dimitris from the website and he'll quote you a price.
been to Koutou for last 3 years - if you need any more info just ask

you'll be amazed at how laid back they are when you collect the car. i was told to leave the last one on the airport car park unlocked with the key under the mat!
different world.
enjoy your holiday.

We are going to Crete in 2 weeks - its normally cheaper to book before you travel with an on line company (do a Google search for companies) - who is cheapest depends when you book, and who has offers on at the time.
Usually these firms have illustrations of the types of car available.
We have booked a Clio with Auto europe http://www.auto-europe.co.uk/car.cfm?aff=google&c=367
for £110 (for 1 week...... but you can usually book any number of days) - who I found was cheapest (plus free extra driver) about 4 months ago - but things could change in that period. Would like to add that this Company price beat another for me, and added extra free driver....... so don't be afraid to ring them to negotiate a deal by phoning them.
We never bother paying extra for air conditioning as we have never been given a car abroad that did not already have it regardless.
Many thanks for info, will give them a go. Hope you enjoy your holiday.
Can anyone recommend a car hire company in the Rethymnon area. We're going next June and would be looking to hire a car for 2 weeks.
