Just an update on my earlier post - despite the well publicised change in the rules for Cuba and my hassle with my bank in getting them to provide suitable confirmation documentation - Cuban immigration never asked for proof of health insurance and nor did the doctor when I actually had to visit a clinic for treatment. All he was concerned about was whether I had the cash to pay for the consultation and medication! Which I did and as it only came to marginally more than the £50 excess I'd have to pay on my policy I'm not sure that it's worth the bother of making a claim anyway!

I've had my tickets from Thomas Cook. I've read the document thoroughly including the check in procedure. It doesn't say anywhere that insurance documents have to be produced
Hi Helen ... I think it is now established to have been a false alarm.
but a few years ago in Lanzarote we had to show our insurance policy schedule to the ambulance crew before they took my son to hospital. They needed to know whether to take him to the private hospital or not.

One potentially costly risk there kazza is that you are uninsured in the event of cancellation. The policy should really be taken out at the time of booking your holiday, so that you are fully covered before, during and after departure. You are paying for cancellation cover anyway, so you may as well have it in place from the time of booking.
