There are no limits but you may be asked questions if you are carrying a large quantity. Stick to one brand so you can prove that they are for your own use. Keep your receipts.

That site is very badly worded. It refers to "European Duty Free Allowances" when the is no duty free within the EU, it is Duty Paid.

It also refers to "allowances". There are no "allowances" in the EU, there are "guidelines" as to how much you can freely move between countries.

Although the guidelines were revised in October from 3200 to 800 cigarettes, you can still take as many as you want. However if you are stopped at Customs, you must be able to prove that they are for personal use or gifts.

Thanks for the advice - husband always came back with 3200 - which were all for his own personal use.

He's now worried to bring that many back even though there are no 'limits' - as he says - how can you prove that they are for personal use?

Theoretically you don't have to prove they are for your personal use, the customs have to prove that they aren't

If you stick to the one brand and keep your receipts then there shouldn't be a problem. We always bring back 3200.

If you were hopping over the Channel every month and bringing back 3200 you would have a problem convincing Customs that they were for personal use.

However if he smoked 20 a day and you only went abroad twice a year then you should be fine.
