Hi,
We have also heard the same thing about Coco Beach and when we were there in October, you could see the waves washing up brown froth...it looked pretty disgusting (although the setting is lovely) and consequently we did'nt go anywhere near the water. Think its more of an inlet than a river and presumably dirty water doesnt get flushed out to sea as easily.
| could be completely wrong though !!

hi, i didnt actually go into the main bit of the coco beach. Do you remember that little puddle of water near it? it was always warm so i just stayed in that bit. It didnt look mucky to me but i didn't bother looking at the proper beach.

Coco Beach has the Nerul River at the Northern end (it is more of a wide stream really and can be walked across at low tide) and also the Mandovi at the extreme Southern end (well I suppose its the East end really but I guess you know where I mean) round the headland towards Fort Reiss.

It does look dirty sometimes and indeed there are mussell beds at the mouth of the Nerul which I have always associated, probably quite wrongly with mucky water, but I think in this instance it is silt washed out from the rivers rather than sewage but who knows what goes on upstream. As I said the river isn;t very big and doesn;t run a long way so there's not much that can get into it before it hits Coco Beach.

The Mandovi is a big river and I suppose it could have lots put into it before it hits the sea but it is also the same river that an awful lot of the seafood served in restaurants is caught in, particularly the shellfish. I'm sure youhave seen the fishermen or at least their nets lining the banks whentravelling from the airport to your hotels. The fish swim in at high tide and get trapped when the tide falls.

The water itself is actually quite clear in Coco Beach, it's the silty bottom that gives it the muddy look and it's a bit odd under foot when you sink up to your ankles in it. As to brown foam I really don't know.

I fish there regularly and always eat what I catch without incident. I also swim there whenever I go fishing although usually off of the boat when we are out a bit from the actual beach because it does look a little murky close in. It is extremely shallow sloping until you get out towards the reef area all of which I think probably mean the water changes aren't as frequent as elsewhere. At high tide the water comes right up to the steps of the restaurants there, the beach only really appears at low tide.

So, know I don't think it is polluted, just very silty.

just come back from two weeks in goa and spent every "beach" day at coco beach, it was gorgeous, didn't see any signs of sewrage or dirt...we are re-booking just to go back and spend more time there, it was heavenly. The sea was crystal clear and calm (unlike calangute and baga beach), it was fairly quiet and the shacks were great. Totally recommend it!

I was at Coco beach in January. It was the dirtiest beach that we went to. I was later advised by a local that it was close to the sewer outlets for Panjim. Needless to say we didn't go back.

Coco Beach is silty and murky but i've swimming in it for years and have not grown a second head yet. The Shacks are great so give it a go....try luvley jubbley shack and you will have a great day.

Every taxi driver will try and sell you a trip yo co-co beach, there is no tide so you can wade for miles, But it is an oil slick, the beach is black with oil as is the sea from all the boats that moor there .

Coco beach is part of the river Mandovi and as such I would not even paddle in there. B

It's a river estuary and not the sea so the water's not clean. I wouldn't even think of going in. Great place to laze on the beach, though!

Coco beach is on 2 rivers, the Nerul & Mandovi, yesterday at high tide the shacks were under water.

Good for Dolphin trips but not swimming.

Do you know Nicky from the Lovely Jubbly Shack?

He's my mate Sanjays brother

Nice fella but a little loud first thing in the morning

We were at Coco Beach non-stop last month whilst in Goa, we thought it was fab for swimming, it's very calm compared to calangute/baga beach, very clear and you can wade out a considerable distance before it gets deep. A lot of families tended to go there with it being so calm as the little ones didn't run the risk of being swept off their feet. The best thing we thought about it was that they don't allow hawkers on the beach so you get no hassle at all. The only sellers were two ice cream men who never once approached us to buy off them. It was our favourite beach as was just so chilled out compared to the other beaches.

Also spent a day at Ashvem Beach which was literally paradise, their were us and another couple on the beach all day - heaven!

Hi Fritz

Yeh I know Nicky...I am sure he is loud in the morning as he is loud all the other times. He's a good lad just as all the luvley jubbley shack boys are. Be back there in 6 weeks, cant wait.

Further up Coco Beach to the left you will find raw sewage behind the beach. I would imagine that when the Monsoon arrives the pool areas behind the beach will rise and overflow and get mixed with the sea water!

It looks like my fears have been confirmed about coco beach  Im taking my toddler again this year and the last time i visited coco beach i found it to be a lot calmer than baga/calangute. Looks like he'll have to stick to the swimming pool .

yummymummy,

Good idea, the Goan people would never go in the water at Coco beach.

Try Mandrem, gentle slope and very clean, also Colva again safe for children.

Hi Fritz & Sonofascouse,
Nicky is a top lad, December 2004, he took me on his moped to find a chemist as my daughter was poorly. We all then went to ice & spice later that evening for a meal, as Nicky works there & thinks he is a bit of a pool shark. Unfortunatley I play in my local pub team, so I gave him a bit of a lesson. He is a genuine, honest, hard working lad. Can not wait to get back to coco beach, & luuvly juubly shack.

Hi Stewbacca

Nicky is indeed a top lad and I intend to rip the michael out of him about the pool when I see him in march. I assume you know my mate Remy and his partner Alex, they have been good friends ever since they hit my girlfriend in the eye with a firework! Now they are guests of honour at our wedding in November.
