I hope they they enjoy their anniversary and find somewhere really nice to eat.

on one of the other days a not to be missed meal when in cork is the Irish gourmet lamb stew at Clancy's bar, we also enjoyed their pasta, we had them as bar meals but they are also available in the restaurant.

Any advice for car hire companies at cork airport. Normally use economy car hire for portugal but know nothing about ireland. I also read somewhere that they take a lot of money from your credit card in case you have an accident
Any help much appreciated

I have used Dooley Car Rentals many times in Ireland and have always found them best in terms of rates, service and standard of cars.

Depending on the size of car, there may be an accident damage excess of between €1000 and €1500. But for a fairly reasonable optional daily charge, you can reduce that excess to €100 (zero at some locations). For added protection, and to reduce security deposits on your credit card, I would say it's worthwhile paying that optional daily charge.

We are off to Baltimore this year and hopeing to travel a little further this yar than last. I am ashamed to say that I am Irish and left over 12 years ago not knowning the wonderful Ireland as I do now. So instead of a trip to the sun we will travel to west cork for a week and catch up with some very dear friends.

Mizen head is a must- the most southerly point in Ireland, the view is breath taking. Glandore and the circle stone is a must.

Didnt make it to cape clear last year but will do this year, and hopefully stop at courtmacsherry. Must check out the boat trips, some cracking reviews on this site and has given me a fw ideas.

I think we may stay at Ralphs hostel, wondered if anyone had any reviews? Last year we stayed at Caseys and is was lovely but expensive.

I wont go on about the food because I'd be here all day!

Happy Holidays

After my parents successful trip to Cork, i am know planning a weekend for me & some friends over St Patricks day 2007.

We have already booked flights with BMI Baby, & need to get going with the hotel as some places are already full for that weekend.

When my parents went, they stayed at the Gresham Metropole & really liked it, so we have that as an option, we are also looking at the Clarion & the Imperial.

The plan is to have 2 nights having fun in the city, then the 3rd day will eb spent chilling out (or detoxing) at a spa, we have thought about doing 2 nights in town, then 1 night at the Radission SAS, but as both the Gresham & Clarion have spas, it is an option to stay all 3 nights at one of those hotels.

Has anyone stayed at the Clarion (this is our favorite by reviews & pictures) or know how central it is, I know the Gresham is just across the river from the bars & shops .. is the Clarion in a similar situation?

any help is really appreciated :D

Hi guys. Have bought a place near killarney so expect to hire cars from Cork quite regular. Can anyone recommend anyone apart from the usual suspects who all seem to be exactly the same price!

Many thanks

Hi

I've just come across this thread. And i have to say what wonderful photos and a great report.

We have booked to go to cork the weekend of the 16th June. There is 22 of us staying at Gresham Metropole Hotel, which i believe to be a very nice central hotel.

We are arriving on the saturday afternoon and are visiting Cork races on the Sunday.
So we have Monday free, what would be the best place for 11 women to go and see. The fellas will just be happy with a walk round Cork, then an afternoon drinking.

Also we would be looking for some nice bar for a gang of us to get into.

We went to Limerick last year and had a fantastic night in Dolans bar.

It's a while since I've been to Cork but in those days Isaacs was run by a family called Isaac and they also ran two excellent restaurants - one called Jacob's and the other called Esau's! Both were really good but one was quite upmarket and fairly formal, the other was more like a bistro and with a simpler, less expensive menu. One also had far more vegetarian dishes on offer too but I can't remember which was which now. Either way, if they are still in the family I'm sure the staff will be able to direct you.

Have just booked a day trip to Cork with Ryanair costing £4.04 for 2 of us!

We arrive approx 0745 and depart 2130 and we are picking up a car at the airport for the day.

Any suggestions about where we might go - we had thought of a visit to Kinsale.

Never been to Ireland before so any hints/tips most welcome.

When is this happening Pippa ? Kinsale is a nice wee town, but could be a little cold and quiet at this time of year. Not all businesses may be open.

Kinsale would be worth considering then Pippa, as perhaps would Cobh and Clonakilty. There is of course the famous Blarney too !!

Considering your early arrival and late departure, it might even be worth looking at somewhere slightly further afield, such as Killarney which is a beautiful town with lots to see. That's assuming you don't want to explore Cork City itself.

You may find some useful info at http://www.corkkerry.ie

Thanks David for the info.

Have bought a map and we will study it when it arrives.

It certainly makes sense to perhaps venture a little further afield and then make our way back slowly. After all Kinsale is very close to the airport for our return.

Killarney does look lovely.

Hi Pippa .. in addition to the map, you could order some free brochures which will provide some local info and suggested tours, places of interest, etc.:
