I've seen loads of those at the airport -usually hen parties or someone's 21st or whatever, usually with a batch of personalised t-shirts "Girls on Tour Faliraki 08..." etcvegasone wrote:a bright pink claires accessory cowboy hat you know the ones the pink fluffy fur round the brim?
Thats what happened to mine - and I packed it so carefully too............what I would say is that you will get JUST as nice cowboy hats out there for probably about the same money.......so could you maybe wait to get one out there?
Hope I havent put a dampener on your shopping but its not the easiest item to transport!
but I will say that it will take up a bit of space in your case - and in fact if its a straw one it might get squished?
My Dad never ventures on holiday without his straw hat and he always packs it in his case. The trick is to pad out the crown with soft stuff such as socks and underwear and then roll a t-shirt or similar into a sausage and place it round the crown inside the brim. It can then go in the centre of the case and other stuff can be packed around it.

Cheers for that SM - I was trying to fold mine in half!
I was trying to fold mine in half
Hi Tootsie, I keep trying to persuade him to invest in a proper 'Panama' because then he could fold it in half! I have a large brimmed, ladies' 'Panama' that folds in half and then rolls up into a tube. It's great for packing - far less hassle than his :-)

now where do I put my spurs !!! lol !!!
now where do I put my spurs !!!
Mmm! You'll need to leave that with me for the moment while I think about it - not a packing problem I've ever had to solve before!
SM
Cracking advise SM, am going to put all my smalls inside it and 'sausage' some t shirts round it, ta ever so !!!
now where do I put my spurs !!! lol !!!
Can I come with you - sounds like you are going to have fun!
SM - can I ask a question - where did you get your Panama? Ive gone through about 4 straw cowboy hats and a "real" one sounds just the ticket!

Well on my first visit to the USA I found a western outfitters and tried on a few. I looked like a sack of s**t tied in the middle, all my dreams shattered!
I got mine mail order from The Guardian - I think that the link below should take you there:

They're not cheap, but I've had mine for over 10 years now and it literally scrubs up well. Because it's made of real straw (not paper like so many 'straw' hats made in China are) whenever it gets grubby I scrub it with a nail brush with a bit of liquid detergent on it, give it a good rinse and then leave it to dry naturally. It comes up a treat and if it ever gets to look a bit too battered or I've left it folded up for a bit too long and got too firm a crease in it, then I steam iron it! Roll a towel up and put it inside the crown of the hat and then literally run the steam iron over it and then iron the brim flat on the ironing board or iron a curve back into the brim depending on how I feel!

when I clicked on it it took me to a disposable water butt on the Guardian site But I was able to find the hat you detailed!
Initially I thought it looked a bit expensive but following your advice I have gone ahead and purchased it.
Many thanks for your advice!
OOoops! Sorry about that! They certainly are quite expensive but mine has outlasted all the cheaper ones I've had over the years. One further tip - I find a hat pin or a corsage flower with a safety pin on the back rather useful. This means that you can pin the brim back over on itself (I usually do it to one side). After it's been rolled up in your case, it makes the brim a bit more rigid and stops it flopping down over your eyes too much. H &M have some lovely corsages in stock at the moment - they don't take up much room in your case and enables you to tie the hat in with the rest of your outfit. Gok has a lot to answer for!
Mine gets crushed in my case, didnt wear it once last year, this year its a big headband for me, or just borrow the other halfs cap!!!! wearing my chain boho headband, or my urban outfitters wide black headband with flower!! gotta be done!! competing with some spanish senoritas!!! they always look good though!!
hi, thinking of getting a cowboy hat for my hols in 3 weeks, thinking of wearing it in the day with denim shorts an bikini or kaftan/casual dress over bikini and maybe even at night with a nice dress, wedges and some nice acsesories and if the denim shorts look ok on me maybe them with a nice top and wedges or white linin trousers and a top, ill see what it looks like! off shoping now!
I'm in the wrong place here, I should be in the 'holiday wardrobe Euro chic' thread instead.
helloooo ! just back from our holiday in jamiaca this morning ( can't sleep, still bloomin 6hours behind !) and I can tell y'all as the original poster that the lovely cowboy hat got one outing for all of, oooh, say, 10 minuites , before getting blown right off me litttle head ! never saw the light of day for the next 2 weeks, hey ho, I shall put it in a lovely glass case and admire it from afar !! on a plus note, hubby bought a crackin' black straw trilby from peacocks for £6 and everyone wanted one !! major hit, he wore it everyday !
you got us all interested!!!! My Hubby took two trendy straw trilbys with him last
week (instead of caps which although protected his face from the sun, he ears
always caught it!) and they were a hit too. He looked a bit like Suggs from Madness
so you can imagine the song and dancing when he wore them.
They suit ladies too. They didn't come back crushed either!
Have a good rest and let us know all the goss!
Sorry Juby for calling you Judy! x
