I am thinking of booking a cruise for the end of February but one question I have ( amongst many ) is how do people manage with their luggage allowance. For example if you go on a caribbean cruise fom New York the usual airline allowance will still be around 20kg. How do you manage to fit in such as suits, evening dresses etc. which will be required on most cruises. Also, from New York for part of the cruise I would have thought some warmer ( heavier ) clothing would also be necessary. We always struggle with luggage allowances when we go to countries where only light casual clothing is needed. Not sure how we will manage this and was wandering how other people cope, as I am sure somehow they must.
Thanks
Main thing nowadays is to buy a suitcase that weighs as little as possible. Also the hand baggage allowance can be generous with many Airlines.
Don't worry too much I do it all the time and manage. I am doing the QM out of NY with 2 nights there prior to the Caribbean 10 night cruise and Cunard is more formal than a lot of Companies but I take everythink I need without too many problems.

I am booked for a cruise with Fred Olsen, flying Edinburgh-New York-Miami. My hold luggage allowance is 2 suitcases up to 23kg each and the hand luggage is 18kg this is flying schedule with Continental not that I will need anything like this weight allowance. If you are flying on a charter flight with Fred Olsen it is usually one suitcase up to 23kg.
We use hand luggage as extra packing space - try to fill with heavier items such as shoes etc
Thanks for the replies. As suggested I think the way to go is make full use of the hand luggage allowance.
We did a 2 week cruise from Southampton, but unfortunately had to fly there so were restricted with the baggage allowance of 20kgs with FlyBe. We weren't charged excess baggage on the flight from Edinburgh, but on the way back we were told we were 20kgs over!

We're going again from Southampton next September, but I've just resigned myself to pay the excess baggage and just consider the flight to cost £50 more than it did.

Would it not be cheaper to ask the airline if you can pay for an upgraded luggage allowance? Thomsonfly offer 5 kilos extra for £30 (return long-haul). I think it's about £18 for short-haul flights.

Unfortunately FlyBe don't let you pay for additional baggage allowance up front.
