Hi there my partener and i were going to go to mexico for our honeymoon but due to the cost of the wedding we have settled on cuba!!!! Having said thatn I'd rather cuba anyway!!!! We have looked at a hotel on the north east of the island whose name escapes me but it's about an hour north from holguin airport. With this in mind we wondered if there was a train that ran to havanna and roughly how much it would cost us and how long would it take to do this journey? Would be very grateful if anybody could give me answers to these questions and if anybody has stayed in a hotel called the Blau something!!!! Thanks
Think the hotel is Blau Costa Verde although there are no reviews on here.
Haven't heard about a train to Havanna thought it was a flight or hours on a coach

Have you thought about a two centre holiday, 3 days in Havana and then the rest of the time at a beach resort. There isn't a huge network of train services in Cuba and what trains there are take forever.
Anyone know how much roughly the overnight trip to Havana is?
We're going to Santa Maria shortly and are interested in this trip.

It costs around 330CUC from Guardalavaca resort but may be cheaper from Cayo Santa Maria as its closer but depends if you fly or go by bus. I would think you would fly from there as bus would take maybe 6-7 hours?
I'm hoping one of you Cuba experts may be able to help me!
My BF Mark is one half of an outfit called SHAKE RATTLE & ROLL. They are planning a show for which they'll need to wear traditional Cuban attire but are stumped for ideas!
Can anyone post links to photos of men in traditional Cuban dress please?
Any help appreciated!

Hi Pippy,
What sort of a show is it? What sort of music do they play? In Cuban music the dress code will vary depending on the sort of music being played. But the traditional 'dressed up' look is white trousers with a white short sleeved shirt (worn loose outside of the trousers) featuring quite intricate multiple rows of pintucking down the front with 2 breast pockets and 2 pockets at hip level trimmed with lots of little pearl buttons. They're known a guajira shirts and I've never seen them outside of Cuba or central America. I'll look some photo out and see if I can send them as attachments to a PM.

Thank you SM!
I'm not sure about the style of music, I'm not in the least bit knowledgeable in this area
Could it be samba? I'll ask him for sure later tonight though.

Mark says they'll be using the following instruments...
Congas, timbales, cowbells and shakers. Does that enlighten you regarding the style of music? Doesn't me!

Yes, it does! I doubt that it will be Samba they'll be playing unless his geography is way out - Samba is more Brazilian than Cuban. Sounds more like they'll be playing Conga to me - which is the constant soundtrack to Carnevale in Cuba. Conga bands are essentially composed of just congas, timbales and cowbells which are usually improvised from various truck and car axel housings! Equally it could be Cuban Rumba which is very percussive and nothing at all like a European ballroom Rumba.
Got your PM so will spend a bit of time going through the photos over the weekend and send you something.

Thanks SM! I meant to add, the show will consist of music from both countries, Brazil and Cuba
If one of the two could be wearing Cuban dress it would just make it more authentic.

My husband and I are thinking of holidaying in Cuba at the end of February. I have read the posts already submitted, but one thing that does concern me is the mozzies. Am I right in thinking that May onwards is a bad time, or does it not really matter? I only ask because I'm always the unfortunate person that attracts anything that bites and end up looking like chickenpox gone mad!
Gillbabe,
May is more humid and generally speaking, there are more mozzies around than earlier / later in the year. It depends which part of the island you visit as well. Varadero / Havana tends to be slightly wetter so there are more mozzies than the other side of the islands, eg the Holguin region. Just take the usual precautions and you'll be fine. Cuba is a great place (I've been twice!) and I wouldn't let mozzies put you off. Cuba is no worse than any other Caribbean destination.

I have just been trying to explain the currency in Cuba to my wife. She made me laugh, when she said it cant be that good if you have to pay to get out of the country.
